Anyone have info on protype quad4?
Thursday, April 22, 2010 3:42 PM
Im asking for a reason, not saying why untill i get the full story. I read they had plans of a 260 horsepower turbo engine, but does anyone have any idea if they had any plans of a high power n/a engine? Not even anything that was meant for production, even if it was a straight race engine would be cool to hear some info on it.

i remember the 250hp quad4 they made 20 years ago!
but if you think they are going to remake the quad4 engine you are dreaming lol

No no not thinking anything like that at all. As awesome as it would be. Im just wondering if they ever made a super high output n/a quad if you will.

as good as they got in production trim was W41 190 hp. If you could land some of the old Rocketparts you would be in good shape.

1987 Oldsmobile Aerotech Concept Car
by the Auto Editors of Consumer Guide

The engine of the Aerotech I was producing about 850 horsepower when A.J. Foyt set the record pace at Fort Stockton Test Center in Texas. Two versions were built: a long tail (LT) with twin turbos, and a short tail (ST) that ran a single turbocharger. The LT reached a peak of 278 miles per hour in one direction, 257 the other way, for an official average of 267.399 mph in the "flying mile."

The Oldsmobile Aerotech concept car could run through the quarter-mile trap in around 8.1 seconds, reaching 181 miles an hour. Chief engineer Ted Louckes noted that Aerotech I was designed around the Quad 4 engine, to demonstrate its capability "in an extreme testing environment" -- and no one could deny that 267 miles an hour was extreme.

Aerotech wasn't a single-company production. A large number of subcontractors were employed for the record-setting Aerotech I project, including one that provided the cockpit's Lexan cover.

A carbon-fiber body sat upon a specially-designed ground-effects Indy-car chassis, and the whole vehicle weighed just 1,600 pounds. High-speed racers need to stick close to the ground and the Oldsmobile Aerotech I concept car was no exception, with an inch or less of airspace between its lowest body point and the ground surface.

A replica of the original Aerotech I toured the 1988 auto shows, while a subdued edition of its Quad 4 engine emerged under the hood of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. This new engine was the first multi-valve powerplant to come from Detroit in recent times. As designer John Perkins said, "concept cars stretch the imagination" and show the public what stylists have in their minds.

The only fair comparison to be made here would be to see the eco beat the standing "flying-mile" record just like the Q4 did in it's day. Till this is done, Q4 ftw!

I don't that's necessary, nor are we ever likely to see it done in a fair comparison, because the whole idea with doing the Aerotech was to get the general buying public excited about (Relatively)small-engine performance, just to get people away from imports & buy GM's new compact models. To which I say: GM dropped the ball by not offering the Quad4 in the Fiero or maybe keeping the T-body (Chevette, Pontiac 1000) around for another year & putting it in that, instead of slap-dashing some Suzuki hatchback with a optional 3-cyl turbo engine.

Anyway, back to where I was leading:

Recently, with the rise in sport-compact popularity (Thanks Hollywood!!! ) and it's related racing classes, GM got back at it again to do what it did before & intro'd the Ecotech to replaced the Quad4 with it's limited potential and dated design. And again, since sport-compact is so hot right now, there's no need for grandstand showboating to garner interest for the eco, like was done for the Quad4.

So basically, unless you or someone else has the dough-re-me money to fully-fund the development & construction of a pair of similar platforms, each perspectively powered by a super-tweek'd version of the two engines mentioned here, the race you're dreaming of won't happen.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

wow still though 1987 an engine as old as most of the kids on this site and still has more power stock then the eco. simply amazing that with all this new technology that the echoes don't have more power out of the box.

well its mostly because the eco was designed to be a boosted slut.

there is an all motor eco 2.4 thats got 170 horse. but jeas.. it took direct injection AND vvt to get it there...

Keep in mind regardless of what motor you are talking about (Quad or Ecotec) they have to watch how much power they give a car. GM does not want a Jbody/Cobalt/Solstice beating up on a Vette when in stock form. Which is why the Quad never made it in the Fiero. When they tried it it out handled the Vette and walked away from it.

yea, people have to keep that in mind. GM likes to keep their big money cars "worth the money"..like right now, vette and camaro are their money makers, to make a 4cyl compact thats as fast or faster right off the lot would defeat most of the purpose of the 2 cars.

The 190hp version was more than impressive in it's day. Especialy since the cars they were found in were relatively light.

I remember the Aerotech campaign. It's likely I still have a few magazines featuring it tucked away in a box.

The Quad 4 name was surely imbeded in my mind.

The markleting plan must have worked, cause look at me now

Agreed. They already made that mistake once with the Grand National.
