i really wasn't positive where to post this so i figured this would be my best bet. The 02 sensor between the cat and the res isn't on my car anymore. when i was running open exhaust it dragged on the ground until it ripped off. when i went to pull my exhaust off to weld it all back together so i could have my cat and res back my exhaust was PITCH black on the inside and when ever sit in one place long enough i can smell gas, and when i rev my engine real high it will backfire. how would i go about making it no run so rich. cheapest is the best for mister un employed over here
Is the motor completely stock? thats weird that the car would run rich on the stock computer settings

short ram. and the exhaust cut off after the cat and resonator
That's how almost any open header car would be. especially our cars because they tend to run a little on the rich side stock. The cat is put in to prevent pretty much everything you described.

On top of that, running an open header like that can have detrimental effects. ie: burnt valves.

for the record, the downstream(after cat) has absolutely nothing to do with the fuel mixture. it only monitors catalytic converter performance.

downstream? are you talking about the 02 sensor thing?
The upstream oxygen sensor AIDS in determining correct air/fuel ratio. More precisely, it tells the ECU whether it's close to 14.7:1 or not. Kinda like the price is right, higher or lower. The rear (downstream and after cat) oxygen sensor does exactly what randizzle said: is the cat working at an acceptable efficiency? Yes/No, period.

well my downstream one, is gone. theirs just wires hanging off my car where it should be
You may want to do something about that. haha

i'll agree that it's @!#$ty, but it is doing nothing to make your engine run worse in any way. if you're trying to get it to run better, the rear o2 has no effect on your problem.

so all thats doing is making it throw codes? because my check engine light is one
yes. all it does it throw codes and make you fail emissions (if your state does that). if i were you, i would scan the codes so you know what's really going on.
