Id just like to know how is everybody doing that has swapped out cams in there l61?

What cams do you have?

How does the car idle?

how does it drive?

How hard was it to tune?

and has anything broke from it?

Thanks

there is a cam tool if you can find it. it holds the gears in place not to mess with timing.
In the motor i bought it has the stage 3 cams from comp cams.
right now it lopes pretty crazy and its not even tuned for it.
drives just fine. without the tune it doesnt like to idle when it comes down from driving, will be fixed with the tune.
not hard to tune.
nothing is broke.

however, you should upgrade valvetrain with any cams you do. i hope jon can chime in here and mention the talk of which springs and what not to use, and the coil bind ratings of them as well. The motor i have has PSI 1530ML springs which both todd miller and jon found to be the best available springs.

i started out buying the turbo cams to put in the car because i got a good deal on them, which a good deal turned into a $1000 project to get them in the car. better safe to upgrade the rest of the stuff while you are doing the cams.

Stage 1s are the best if your trying to keep a stock tune they wake the car and you don't even know their there. I've personally run stage 2s and 3s on stock heads(and I mean stock heads) I loved the stage 2s just about the best street freindly cam on the market for us mid range and top end pulled like an animal idle had a slight lope to it. Tuning it was pretty simple. The stage 3s were a pain in my ass after the abuse of the stage 2s(valvespring are needed but I'm not first or last to run em without) the valvespring snapped. I've supertech springs and bates race valve springs in my room(haven't decided yet I want the psi but jon if I remember cut into his valve seat). But they puller hard as hell even when the valvespring went I'll be using the stage3s again but down low the car almost can feel like a dog because they do shift your powerband quite high. I'll be in arizona in a couple weeks my car has stage 1s in it right now and your more than welcome to drive it. Sorry its bunched I'm on my blackberry.

yes jon did machine the spring seats for the larger psi springs. they have a larger diameter than the rest of them.

Yea that's what I thought I don't trust anyone well enough to do that here, I don't want to rick them taking to much off.

Great.

What cams do you have?
Blower grind

How does the car idle?
At stock idle very lumpy and stalls during decel
1k rpm idle it idles better but still throws the p0300 random missfire

how does it drive?
Awsome, the only negative is the idle quality.

How hard was it to tune?
Increase timing at idle, increase idle rpm

i have the comp stage 1 in my car had them in for about 2 years already and no problems with them. car is not tuned either so it idles with a lope and like crap. i drive it everyday and on road trips of about 200 miles several times already and have not hade a single problem with them. Nothing broken from them yet but if something does break it gives me a reason to start a build so its all good.

Thank you all for the input about cams.

Im also glad to hear that general it seems like not too many horrible things happen to the valve-train and things like that.

To add a question - Who has replaced their valve springs w/o pulling the head? I know it is possible with other engines, but i am just curious of any quirks with the eco's head design.

219whp - I <3 whine

I replaced the valve springs without pulling the head. Pressurize the cylinder with the piston at TDC and with the right tool it can be done. The tool : http://www.doityourself.com/invt/schley-sch91400a-universal-overhead-camshaft-valve-spring-compressor-91400a-541798601

The thing that makes the eco harder is that the valve springs are pretty narrow and the pockets for the springs are a little tight (space wise)
