gaining some power from an eco
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 2:58 PM
i was wondering what mods would be most beneficial for my ecotec.
it'd be nice to gain another 20-25 hp or shave off a second on the track.
i don't wanna do any force induction for now since the car is gonna be my daily driver.

i'm confused?

mines been daily driven and driven hard Evey day of its life, 20,000km's boosted...not a problem, my buddies car was a DD over a 120,000km boosted.....i can thinking of probably 40 daily driven J's that are boosted.......

But on the topic, start with header, exhaust, poly mounts and an intake.

would those bolt ons yield me 20 whp? anybody dynoed

header, full exhaust and intake alone would run upto to an even grand, if not more... i am trying to do the math if it's actually worth it to spend a grand on 20 hp..

if ur cheap, then go with n2o. it's the best bang for your buck.

and no an intake, and full exhaust will not run a grand, u just have to shop around.

And no they won't get you 20hp extra by themselves. Intake header and exhaust with a tune maybe 10hp throw cams in there with a good tune and you can see 20hp. And if a grands expensive then you've got into the wrong hobby.

well, add another grand and i got go boosted.. and that's 5 times the power we're talking about. i guess i'll just save up and do that..

ur still going to have to get a full exhaust if you boost. and a tune, there's a little bit more to it than just slapping a turbo/blower on ur car and driving off into the perfect $2,000 sunset. i think you should read the faqs here, then the boost faqs, then when ur tired of reading, research and read some more. do a little bit of research on what you can do to your car and then decide what you want to do.

it's not that i don't have a grand or that i am cheap. that's not the point

the point is that in terms of money for power ratio it'd make more sense to me to boost rather than building up engine.

in one way i can spend a grand on basic bolt ons and an intake for some 20 hp
and in other way i can spend 2-3 grand on boost + exhaust and a tune and make 100+ hp

conclusion: 3 times the money, 5 times the power

what you guys think of this?

i think it's china junk and most of it probly won't actually work. also, it's for a cobalt........just sayin

is nitrous illegal for track use there?

If your goal is just for it to be a dd then just go bolt ons and cams and call it a day trust me it'll be plenty quick. I think you need to stop throwing numbers around and figure a goal for yourself.

and from your profile
Quote:

Engine: 2.2L I4 OHV
Engine:
Vibrant WAI
Upper/Lower Polyurethane motor mounts
NGK 55IX Irridium Plugs
Taylor 8mm wires
APC free flowing exhaust
syntetic oil

you sure you have an Ecotec?

Intake, header, and exhaust would definitly be the best start. Frankly, there's no reason at all to spend a grand on all that. I garuntee you can do it all for under 500. Other simple things like running hotter spark plugs and synthetic oil help horsepower to. Also, check out light wait underdrive pulleys and try to up the fuel pressure a bit.

Gotcha, i saw your other thread in the other cars forum
You might wanna look into the LE5 manifold, it bolts right on and im not sure but i dont think its necessary to tune it in cobalts
but again you should search another forum for that, most info on here would be on jbodies

You could just be like me and get a custom dual exhaust, 2.5" header, cold air intake, 10.2mm wires and a lightweight crank pulley for like $525 total. That pepped up my 2200 an incredible amount. For an extra $100 or so you get the motor and tranny prothane inserts, and you feel a really nice power increase. I'm just too lazy to install my inserts atm

Hope is not a plan. Change is not a destination.

Wait so do you have a cavy or cobalt if you have a cobalt and wanted to boost go zzp and buy one of their supercharger set-ups for 1500 then bolt ons wouldn't be useless.

my custom exhaust and intake all together ran me about $550 or so and thats with full 2.5" exhaust and all mandrel bends with good parts, same with intake.

poly mounts, good tires, intake, exhuast, header should at least take off a second it should take off more unless you suck at driving. i know my eco is way more responsive now then it ever was stock, funny especially when i drive a friends stock eco cav huge difference.

and after those things start on suspension, struts/springs, strut mounts, strot tower bars, poly bushings, antisway bar kits also make a huge difference and car becomes a whole different ride after.
