hey everyone,
I was looking to get a new air intake for my 2004 cavalier. I've looked around some, and it seems that all the intakes for the '03-'05 model Cavaliers are no less than a few hundred dollars. Does anyone know of any place where I can get one for cheaper? Or maybe have one for sale? I was tending to look for a short ram intake because a friend of mine said that if i hit a nice puddle with a cold air intake it could ruin my engine... is that true?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get $20-30 intake off of ebay for the 2.4L and and throw a K&N filter on it. That's what i did, cost me about $80 total
u may have to do a little custom work to get it to fit right but yeah it should. the biggest problem people run into with these is hood clearance.
The best air-intake to be made is one that catches air as you're driving down the road. Having made one in the past has taught me that... I'd gladly do it again, if I have the time.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
Cosmo Racing sells theirs for about $94 shipped. They're a Canadian based company...but they advertise the Eco intake and the LD9 intakes with the same pictures. I can tell you that they will fit, but it's a pain in the tail to get everything to line up. I had one on my car for 2 years, it worked and sounded great, but it did tear up my hood insulation a bit. I just hunted around until I get my hands on a used K&N intake....MUCH better fit.
alright, i appreciate the the ideas. If i can avoid it, i dont think that I want to buy a 2.4L intake. If it comes down to it though I may have to. I found an intake on ebay just today that Im hoping to win. It is an aftermarket intake that some guy had on his 2004 cavy.
Was that an offer to make me a custom intake?

Not by me....it's been done on JBO by quite a few though.

Yes I do, their customer service [i've been told] ison't bad, but because I live in the states, it's a bit on the laggy side

On that ebay one it wont go all the way to the throttle body.. probably would've had the same effect by putting a cone filter on the stock tubing... It'll still help it breathe, and really isn't a bad price with the filter included though.
^true but he's still gonna want to get that resonator box off of there or it's pretty pointless imo.

This is an aftermarker intake. It will fit a 2004 cavalier all you need to do is remove stock intake housing. It sounds better and adds about 10 to 15 HP. I felt a difference in pickup.

So to summarize the main points expressed in our conversation. He could not tell me the brand name on the aftermarket intake, but claimed that it increased hp by 10-15. And he put roughly 2,500 - 3,000 miles on it.
I ended up bidding on it because it was this was by far the best price that I had found on an intake. He had used it on a 2004 Cavalier which was the same that I was going to install it on. I wouldn't mind adding the amount of HP that he claims this intake gives. What makes me skeptical is that he couldn't provide a brand name for the intake...
So what is the tubing size of the stock air intake? What is the diameter of the stock trottle body(housing thing?)?

I have an actual K&N WAI on my car...you pretty much won't get any more than about 5.5hp over stock in ideal conditions. What you've bought doesn't go all the way to the throttle body, so it retains the resonator box over the TB, not as good on flow as a full intake would be, so plan for about a 2-3hp increase with that setup. It won't be something you notice in lower RPMs, only above 3k or so.
try some pvc if you want to go cheap

I believe the term you mean is: "Bug-catcher"... Old rodder slang for a forward facing air-scoop or mechanical-injection system's throttle-body "hat" placed atop or above the intake system of a automobile's piston engine, designed to catch any oncoming air the vehicle sees as its moving forward. So named for, well... You can figure it out.
My buddy once made what came to be known as a "Rabbit-catcher" for the factory inter-cooler of his '87 GN. It worked well, as it had such a large inlet that it easily caught lots of air at low speeds when he'd leave, making the 'cooler more effective. But it was so big & obvious that others would catch sight of it & shy-away from challenging him. And although it well-cleared the ground, it hung pretty low... So low that while out on a rural road, cruisin' with his girl to her cousin's, it actually picked-up a rabbit that darted-out in-front of him. It tried to hit it center, hoping the car would just pass over it cleanly, but didn't see it "fall-away" in his rear-view. After a bit, he noticed the GN wasn't performing like it did earlier, so he pulled-over & started checking the car... Sure enough, there was that rabbit.
Right-there in the scoop,
still alive! He fished it out & it tried to hop-away with two broken hind-legs, and the whole ordeal made his girl cry, so he removed the scoop the next day.

Am I going to have to buy something more to make this intake fit properly, or do I just take off less and plug 'er in?

It looks like all you'll have to take off is the filter box and the "S" shaped tube...
