Msd coils???
Friday, October 30, 2009 7:28 AM
Ok I have the 2.2 coil swap on my ld9 using 2.2 coils and icm, and msd universal wires. I just color matched the icm connector wires, instead of gutting the stock icm like some have. No issues at all for almost 2 years.

Now when I tried running msd 8224 coils, the car would misfire a bit and even stalled a few times. I have tried 2 different sets of 8224 coils with same results both times, even with stock wires and new plugs with the same gap. Ive thought about something to do with using the 2.2 icm instead of the msd interface modules, but have seen others do it fine and the coils are supposed to be direct replacements anyway.

Thoughts?

Hmm we are running stock 2.4 icm, msd adapters, msd coils, and accell wires on the turbo car. That supports 440 whp. How did you connect all the wires?

Im guessing you mean the icm connector wires? The factory icm connector was cut off and the 2.2 icm connectors were soldered/ heatshrinked on. Exact same wire colors, this is one way of doing the swap. Like said have had no problems with the stock coils for 2 years.

I'm running the 2200 coils, and ICM, with stock wires. I was going to see about getting MSD coils. Will watch this.

why does everybody use MSD coils?

can't someone try something different for ONCE?

mallory.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!

does mallory make coils that work with the 2200 setup?

I have some accell coils I plan on doing this with

What is the big deal with using a known good product?

Well I know MSD makes a coil that is a direct fit for the 2200 coils. Do not know if Mallory ot accell do. I like the look of MSD coils in the engine bay also

I have a pair from Summit Racing. I've had no problems with them on my 2.2L OHV.

Its not the actual coils themselves that are bad because they worked on other cars perfectly. I think if I tried other aftermarket coils it would maybe do the same thing, idk?

So alot of you are using aftermarket coils with the 2200 icm used on an ld9? Ive seen alot of 2200's with aftermarket coils but all the ld9s with the swap using aftermarket coils also used the interface modules.

Well if you did a 2200 coil swap and then swap to MSD coils you have to use the 2200 ICM. If not you have to do the other coil swap (is it neon)?

Have you thought about swapping the ICM to a newer 2200 icm?

Yea I meant like all the ld9 people using msd coils Ive seen are using interface modules instead of the 2200 icm.

I have seen some using MSD with the 2200 ICM.

Brad, the main reason people use the MSD coils is that they have the closest primary and secondary resistances to our 2.2 coils but have larger windings which in theory would give you a bigger spark and longer.
The Neon coils people use don't have the high voltage as the MSD but still seems to work for most. Some have experienced problems with the less than stock coil output voltages.

IceMike, I don't use the interfaces with my MSD coils. I'm one of the very few that have gutted the 2.2 ICM, rewired it internally, and made it to work for housing the coils like stock, and having a platform to mount them.
There have been others that have used the 2200 ICM in place of the LD9's unit but not sure if they'd used the MSD coils with that setup.
In theory there should be no difference in the coils as the MSD product has very similar impedances for their primary and secondary coils so the ICM should see that as the stock coil.
The only thing I can think of is that the load is too great with the heavier windings of the MSD units that the dwell time between recharge is not enough to charge up the MSD coils.

You just confused me.

Why did you rewire the 2200 ICM?

I have the 2.2l icm and summit coils in the 03. That same setuo was in the turbo car as well. works great.

Been using Summit coils for at least three years myself. No problems.

hmmm...anyone care to share the specs to compare the coils to see if this may be true? i'm very interested in this...don't have a 2.4, but this seems to fascinate me a bit, and i like figuring stuff out...someone go ohm your coils! need stock and msd's! if i have time tomorrow between work and school i'll check my coils(stock)

I may get another set of msd coils to test but dont wana buy them brand new if I cant make them work. May try interface modules as well, Ill have to check how the wiring would have to change from how mine is now.

not to be off topic but i had accel coils on my old car and they kept going bad someone told me i was probably starving them. but id like to try the msd coils with the moduals seems like a nice setup

If I ever get around to doing this.... Im just planning on using the stock 2.4 ICM and mounting it to one of those pretty billet IDI covers... (cover just there to hold the ICM and for looks)

I've never been able to find the MSD coils or interface modules for sale or my car woulda been converted awhile ago..

Im not really in a hurry anymore though....

And why would you use a 2.2 ICM on a 2.4 when your running MSD coils instead of just using interface modules?
