Pistons 2.2L

I have a 94' Cavalier. It has the 2.2 4 cyl. I circle track race on a 1/4 mile oval. I am in the process of rebuilding the engine and I have been told that I could use 98' pistons in order to gain compression. Also, this could be done without modification. I was wondering if this would help me any or if I could get more "bang for my buck" somewhere else. Thanks in advance for all answers...

Read the thread in here by Bob Guptill. Is it possible? Yes. With no supporting mods? F_ck no.

Where can you purchase forged pistons for the 2.2L then. i have a 95. and cant seem to find anywhere that sells them.

Any piston company will make a custom set of forged slugs to your specs.

Buying off the shelf ones would limit you a lot, because when it comes to our cars off the shelf pistons generally have a narrow range of overbore and compression specs.

That's gotta be pretty expensive though. Even though everything for this engine will be expensive.

i buy custom flat tops from ross racing $600 per set with rings, but you need eagle rods with them as the smallest pin they offer is .830 so the small end on the rod needs to be honed out.

1998 pistons can be put in a 2.2 just do not shave the head at all, we have a guy running them fine with a 1996 fuel injected cavalier but with my motor that had a lot more done cam wise and a lot of head shaving they did not fare to well to say the least

So if i got the eagle rods and the pistons from ross racing i wouldnt have to hone it or i would?

You're dealing with an engine that's how tired and you're asking this? Really...

Does it matter if my engine is older. I would rather put the parts on this engine while im learning how to mod. so if i screw something up and the engine goes i can do a swap for something newer.

Genius: I meant the engine is probably very worn from however many miles it's seen since it rolled off the assembly line, and I'm guessing alot if it's from a '94 J-car (Re: somewhat heavy car (4-dr), 3-spd trans (If Auto) that's seen highway use) it's pretty tired. I bet it's got about, what? 100,000-nearly 200,000mi on it (If not more)? So in short: Odds are you'll need to hone it for the sake of trying to get the rings to seat properly. So, yes... Hone it!

teh rods are the eagles sold for the ln2 part number CRS5590C3D
the pistons are number 100779
those are flat top pistons so any of you guys going boosted dont use them
and like i said ross' smallest pin is .830 and the rods are made for a .804 stock cavalier pin so a machine shop has to bore the brass bushing on the small end i can get some pictures of the pistons i have

here are the pics of my flatops and the broken eagle rod
btw we only allowed this much destruction to happen because we were leading on lap 28 of a 30 lap race, the next corner this happened, we had no oil pressure from the start of the race
