Air intakes, header, exhaust, throttle body
Friday, August 29, 2008 8:12 PM
I'm looking to improve some things on my 97 sunfire. I'm having trouble finding parts for this. Especially the air intake. My throttle body faces straight foward. If anyone is selling or can help me find these parts it would be much obliged. (air intake, header, highflow cat, cat back, throttle body). Also is there any Jbody owners around Ft. Riley Kansas?

what motor do you have? 2.4 or 2.2? i assume 2.2, a lot of those parts you might be able to get here off the classifieds check the regional forums also. e-bay is another option, but i would be very careful purchasing parts on ebay theres been a lot of real looking fake parts going around.

Yea, i got a 2.2. I've checked Ebay, I'm a newer Jbody owner and dont know a whole lot about them. Just trying to get some feedback on aftermarket parts.

Basically, anything that's done to the 2200 can be done to the 2.2L (With few variances) since they are the same engine (Despite many variances between the two). The most common (Bolt-on) mods are:

Full exhaust with header

Air-inlet tract

Crane Gold Narrow-body 1.6-ratio rocker install

And of course, OBD-II tune reflash.

I should also mention the installation of a 22" glass-pack muffler between the catalytic-convertor & the first bend after it in the exhaust system to help bring the noise down & give it a more deep, mellow tone... But that's more of a taste thing, plus most serious builders are sick & tired of the tinny "ricer" sound that comes from too large of pipe or typical "el-cheapo" fart-can system.

As for selecting a header, lemme ask you this: Is this a 3-spd auto or a 4-spd? Or is it a 5-spd manual? If it's one of the latter two I'd suggest going with a 4-1 design since that'll help with the low-end torque as you're cruisin' along in top gear. If it's the 3-spd auto, the 4-2-1 (Tri-Y, if you're a traditionalist) is the better choice since it helps produce a nice broad torque curve throughout the RPM band.

As for suppliers, you're left to search for youself there I'm afraid.

Hey, it's cool... I've got a 4-spd auto bolted to mine, too. Of course, I should mention that it's in a S-truck. Still good, thou.

There sure are a lot of S-10 forums too...

I bet they could use your help...

No thanks... This & the one other is just fine for me. Besides, I was here first thanks to a local member, who also had a LN2, who gave directions. Plus the truck & car versions prior to '98 are so much alike, you can't even see the difference in the intake manifolds in-car. And you guys have been so much help, isn't it time I repaid the favor by offering the same advice I found here to them? Just trying to help!
