2.2 coil conversion write up

Yes I have searched and the only one i found did not have any real written directions and then a horrible hand drawn diagram.

Is there a good writeup out there for the coil conversion on the LD9?

Misnblu's Ignition Writeup

I did mine with this one. I had no trouble with the directions or diagrams

Skwirly Write-Up

This is the one I followed. Done by PJ. Super easy for the ecotec.

I used several guides including the Misnblu one. Bottom line is if you are just doing the 2.2 coil conversion (non MSD) the wiring colours match 100% so your just splicing and connecting the corresponding wires. I kept the 2.4 connectors in line in case I had to switch back on the fly. I've had it for about 6 months and its trouble free. I used a spare idi cover to bore through and run the wires. Here's how it looks today. Good luck.

i have been thinkin of doin this mod but what does it actually do for our cars? is it just for better spark or is there more reason behind it?

^^^ You won't do a back flip over the performance gain ... lol. From my perspective, I did it because I hated pulling that idi apart with the boots and all to change the plugs. As for how it works, very quick and smooth start ups and runs great. I also like the look of the engine bay with the wires showing (will get around to coloured wires soon). Also a good base for the ignition upgrade if you plan to do more performance based mods to the motor.

ok thanks, yea i dont like tearin my idi down either, so let me see if i get this straight, i can just take to 2.2l coils splice into the wires and runs my plug wires? would it be better to run a msd? and do i need to do anything to the computer after this mod?

of course it would be better to run MSD, no there is no computer mod after the msd or any other part of this mod. You also should get a DIS-2 to justify the MSD upgrade or you won't see the true potential. Also you could use the coil pack from a mitsu to save yourself $80 if you decide to go the MSD route.

Can you get me a closer up picture of your IDI cover. I like how you routed the wires out the top like that. I just did my MSD swap and I think I would like to do that b/c I dont like the wires being tucked under the cover.

I did my write up the only way I know how to do things electronically and that was with a schematic.
The drawings I have are schematical diagrams so that if you've never read an electrical schematic, you probably won't get or understand the basis of the wiring.
I didnt do this on purpose or to confuse people with what I did but it was the only way I could convey to myself and others on how I gutted the 2.2 ICM, rewired it to accomodate what would work for me in what I was trying to achieve for a better ignition spark.
And it did work, marvelously.
Others have found better ways to do what I've done with less work involved so you may want to check those out by doing some searching on the forums etc.
PJ's setup is nice and good to see it done on the Ecotec engine.
An MSD DIS2 would only enhance the ignition spark on an otherwise stock setup.
Good luck with your setup.

Neo - That's the only pic I have. It's just the IDI with the coil housing removed. I marked off 4 points equally spaced over the centre of the cover and bored through with a hole saw on a drill.

uflip06 - Is your module still under the cover? Looks like the last hole is pretty close to the module. Or did you mount it somewhere else?
