Modified HO Intake Cam - Interest?
Thursday, January 10, 2008 3:52 PM
After some designing and such with my dad, we had a tool machined to remove the hex drive from the 2.4L intake cam. I also spoke with a local machine shop that is willing to machine down the HO cam, and press fit the hex drive into it. I am wondering what kind of interest there may be in having this done. The only thing left would be to have the intake cam carrier bored out to accomodate the larger lifters. I wouldn't, however, have the cam sensor piece welded onto the cam. It is too much work and too costly to have done. After research, the car will run fine without it which I'm sure more than one of the .org members can vouch for.

I was contemplating having anyone who would want this done to send me their intake cam so I can remove the hex drive from it. Otherwise I'm sure I can come up with a limited supply of them at scrap yards.

Pricing is up in the air now. After doing the first one, the machine shop is going to give me an estimate of any future runs. It also depends if you want a brand new HO intake cam that I can order, or if you want to send one to me that you already have.

Let me know if there is any kind of interest in this and I will see what I can do!

Listening. Would you be interested in doing a W41 intake cam? Sending in my intake came wouldn't be the best for me, guess I could send my 95 intake cam. Is pressing in the hex reliable to high RPM?

Shawn would you be willing to trade the 95 intake cam for a HO Cam?

I am very interested and i have a stock ld9 cam and an HO cam as well!! I have been trying to find a place to do it. When do you think yours will be done? I am looking to do this in the summer sometime. Also would the machine shop be able to modify the tower as well? I already have one the has the bores at 35mm but the cam still hits because of the spacing of the lobes. All that needs to be done is the chamfer around the bore needs to be modified.

Mine won't be done for another 2-3 weeks. The machine shop is extremely busy. They could also possibly machine the cam towers. I'm not sure if he wants to do that on a regular basis. I will have to check with him.

FYI, I use a cutoff wheel and then split the cam. Easy.

Its pretty easy. Hope they aren't charging you much.

Both are a bitch and plenty hard to do.

Good call.

Thanks Todd for the replies The machine shop didn't think it would be any problem to bore out the towers for the larger lifters. Maybe he just didn't sit down and look at it yet...

luke, its something id like to have done down the road, but nowhere in the near future im afraid

i do have a junk 95 intake cam with the ps hex drive in it so coming up with that is easy.

I could also pull out the hex drive units and sell them to whoever would want one and maybe use it in the future if that would help anyone out.

I am interested in having the cam tower machined out for the 2.3 lifters.

^^^ same here.

Still a little confused on whats being offers with the cam.

Basically, we get you (or you source) an HO (.410 lift or higher) cam and you'll set it up for us to bolt onto our LD9s?

I am able to modify the hex drive on the cam so you can use your stock 2.4L power steering pump. You would still have to have your cam tower bored out to accommodate the larger 2.3L lifters. So it isn't exactly direct bolt-on until you get your cam tower bored out.

I guess its too late for me since I dont have vavle reliefs pistons, they do have a bit of a dish but not valve relief, so i dont think i can go any bigger than the regular secret cams right?

GMR has got nothing on this

You don't need valve reliefs to run HO cams...

are you sure about that? Everything I have read about it says you can't run HO cams on a LD9 with out major changes. The three biggest are the oil problem (because to use all of the HO cams you need to have upgraded the oil pump), tuning, and valve train mods required. Guess I never specifically read clearance was an issue, but I haven't heard of anyone running HO cams on stock pistons/rods/head.

you do not need to upgrade the oiling system to run ho cams. valve train would be best to run the 2,3 ho/w41 valves but the stock 2.4 ones do work.

You have been terribly misinformed. You don't have to have an upgraded ooiling pump, you can get away running them without tuning, although it would definitely help, and valvetrain mods are not required either, but recommended. I know of a few people running stock 2.4L valvetrain components. And there are no clearance issues...

The oil pump comment was because the HO cams make power higher in the RPM, thus you will be rolling the dice more with a stock oil system.
Really? You know people running stock 2.4L lifters with HO cams? Because last time I checked lifters are part of a valvetrain.
Again, my main worry is clearance with the pistons, can anyone comment on that?

When I was referring to valvetrain components, I meant springs and retainers. I should have clarified that I didn't mean lifters. The lifters must be 2.3L lifters. And again, there are no clearance issues with HO cams. Could someone else please chime in here to confirm this and put everyone's mind at ease?

hence he mentioned already u do need the larger lifters... good day

also only clearance issues with pistons ive heard of is when there has been the 2.3 head swapped on, and yet im still not sure on that.

Hey Luke is it possible to have a hex driven power steering pump on a 2.3 LGO or a belt driven p.steering pump on a 2.4

you said you've seen pics of a belt powered p. steering pump on a 2.4 right?
