hey is there a du=ifference in the heads from 1996 to 2000 because i bought a head for my car i have a 2.4 2001 and the head i bought i think it migfht have come out of a 1996 just wondering if there is a difference...

as far as i know there are no differences in the head years. they all have the EGR tunnel through them as well. as long as you put your 2001 exhaust manifold and gasket back on you should be just fine.
Check the casting numbers. The 99-02 2.4L head is 24575779. The 96-98 2.4L head is 24574683-18.
They're interchangeable... very little changed.
The chamber grew slightly on the 00-02 heads. The ports also seem to be smaller on the exhaust side from what I can remember when I had a 97 and a 02 next to each other.
well i am going to be port matching and polishing the head completely wit over sized valves. valve job and 2.3 springs and retainers. so it shouldnt really be a difference right?

There are not differences my cav it is 2000 2.4L and bought another head recently 1998 and they are exactly same.
Externally, they are exactly the same looking. But I assure you, there are minor differences in the chambers as mitd774 stated. I have pics to show this... I can post them if you really want. I don't know about the exhaust ports, I thought they were the same...
The ports on my 97 head were slightly larger than my 02 head. There are some differences in the exterior of the head, mainly the exhaust manifold gasket area. I do not believe there are any dimensional differences with it though.
hey lenko, could you post up the pics?
Here:
The head on top is the 99-02 head, the bottom is the 96-98. Look between the exhaust valves (upper, the smaller valves)... there's a triangular bump on the 96-98, but it's not there on the 99-02 head. The coolant passage openings are also slightly larger on the 99-02 in the exhaust area.
The exhaust ports look pretty similar to me... but it's too late for me to measure them... the top head was ported a long time ago... and the bottom head was cut into pieces so I could see how much meat there was to port with... then it got junked.
...j
If this is my motor it is not this way 2000 or my head is not 2000
Now if this is, my intention is port matching and polishing the 98 head I will have some problem when install it in my 2000 engine?
Ok thank you but it is strange what has happened me, the only explanation that I get is that in my country the years of the vehicles don't agree with those of United States.
Of equal it forms if the coolant passages are small they can influence in heating the engine.
What country would that be?
I'm in Canada. I'm pretty certain it was the same for all areas, there were only 3 different plants (well, 4 if you count Genasys for the convertibles) that made third gens... all the engines came from the same place.
Mario has a Mexican Jbody. I'd bet my sweet ass.
I am from Venezuela and is it certain I believe that my car has of mexico being, do they believe that the difference in the coolant passages affects something?
And excuse my not well English one

so does this mean that the 9.7:1 compression pistons in those year ld9's meant jack? (in terms of the 96-99.5's 9.5:1's)
so basically i see it this way:
96-99.5's (9.5:1 compression pistons) but smaller combustion chambers in the head
99.5-02's (9.7:1 compression pistons) but larger combustion chambers in the head
seems to me that the compression would not have changed then. so, to utilize the higher compression pistons and acctually up the compression, you need to swap on a 96-99.5 head (if you have a 99.5-02), right?
wow i had no idea the heads were any different whatsoever. i always thought they were exactly the same.
