Hey, I have an autometer Zseries 2 1/16 RPM gauge hooked up because I swapped out PCMs for boost and my stock tach doesnt work.. Anyway, I hooked this gauge up, set it to the 4 cyl setting on the back of the gauge and soldered the wire to the WHITE tach signal wire on my coil where it went into to the stock IDI cover(I have msd coils now though) and the tach reads HALF rpm of what im actually at.. What did I do wrong, is there another wire that I need to tap into? We looked up on ALLDATA to see which tach wire to use and it said WHITE wire #10 I believe is the tach signal..
Any help is much appricitated...

With our waste spark, that could be causing the problem. Change the settings to "2 cylinders" and see if that fixes the problem

I thought you needed the pink wire, but I can not remeber.

Isnt there a tach wire in the underhood fuse box you can use??
^^Ive heard that but I can not find it at all..
Mike, Ive head that as well but the pink is power, at least thats what it said in ALLDATA.
Brian, my gauge only has 4, 6 and 8 cyl settings on the back of the gauge.. No 2 cyl

i tiried to use the pink wire before and it didnt work. then i gave up. so the white wire should be it.
Pink going to the ICM is 12v "Hot in Run/crank/start"

Your working on a '97 so,try taking your fuse box loose (the one under the hood). Flip it upside down and take the bottom off. There will be 6-8 plastic clips holding it on. Make a mental note of where the cover shows "Tach" and look at that postion from the bottom. There should be a white wire in that slot. Tapping into that wire should give you a good tach signal.

Thanks Gary... So will the black cover show the word TACH? because ive looked for that before and didnt see it on there.. Ill try again this evening to look.

Or if your talking about your white 97 Cavy......
why don't you just do it the easy way...
Tachometer Signal Wire Installation
for 2.4L engine(s)
Pin 10 , white wire, connector 2 (at the ecm)
you dont need an adapter.
This is a great website for gauge wiring.. ---------->
Click hear for all your tach wiring answers.
btw....... don't select Cavelier Z24 for the model type unless you have a 1995.... it's a screw up they never caught. (Just select "cavelier" instead.)
Thanks Gary.
Weebel, thats the wire that I tapped into, just up closer to the ICM wires..

Well, just checked.. My fuse box cover doesnt even say TACH on it... I even opened the bottom up and there is not a white wire under where it should say TACH...
This wiring harness is a 99 2.4L....

^^^^ pretty sure mine doesn't have one either, so I would suppose it's normal

Sorry, didn't know you changed your harness out to a '99. You can do like Weebel said and run a wire to the #10 position on the Black connector at the PCM. Or you can get a Tach adapter like Ron said.

Actually thats not the wire you tapped into. In 99+ the tach signal pin at the ECU doesn't have a wire in it. You could put a wire in there and get a full tach signal though, Connector 2, pin 10.

^^^ yep full RPM signal. Had to use it when i tried using an Emanage.
Ahhh ok,, I see what you guys are saying.. Ill have to do that then... Thanks alot guys.

SO, I just took apart my pcm connectors and found something interesting...
The #10 position on the black connector is NOT used on my pcm... The hole is empty, no wires going in it..
On the black connector, the only WHITE wire is in position #58 and that is the EVAP canister vent solenoid driver according to my 99 service manual.
On connector 1(blue) I found the following
pin 19 is the pink wire and that is the Ignition Positive voltage(2)
pin 61 is another pink wire and that is the Ignition Positive voltage(1)
Now, what is going on here? Obviously my WHITE wire is not the TACH signal down by my pcm... But the white wire I tapped into up by my ICM wires gives me a half TACH reading
.
Could it be the pink wires down my my pcm that I tap into? If so, which one that I listed above?
Thanks

You'll have to run a
NEW wire to the #10 position on the black connector.

in order to install an aftermarket tachometer into your car you need to use the purple/white wire in the engine harness. The engine harness is found next to the battery, below the radiator hose, just above the transaxle. Its in black loom. If that doesn't work then you need to buy a tach adapter from autometer. If you buy the adapter, it hooks up at the idi cover and it takes the signal its getting and makes it read as if it were getting a normal tach signal so that way its not reading at half the actual rpm ur at.
