ok im looking to get a stock rebuilt LD9.. and just wondering what the difference from the 1997-1998 LD9 2.4L engines to a 1999-2002 LD9 is? here is a link to the place i am looking at

but if they are both the same id rather pay $1858 and not $3289
The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno
sensors/locations and whanot...at least so im told
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
The injectors are different.... and I don't think the newer version has an EGR. The ECM on the newer version is programmed a little differently also.. and it's much easier to install a GMSC on one.
Things that make the 99+ different:
1. No EGR
2. Different water jacket shapes
3. Higher compression (9.7:1 versus 9.5:1)
4. Different Injectors
5. Different intake manifold (no EGR port)
6. Different knock sensor hole size and type (1 wire versus 2)
7. Different ECU

just added to your info ron, i know you know all of this, but sometimes all this stuff can get confusing
Forgot the fatter starter in 98-96.
Use all you sensors, intake manifold, header, starter, injectors, fuel rail, from your 01. Also summit can get it for about the same price or cheaper.
The only problem is the knock sensor. You need to modify the blind hole larger or get an adapter to make the knock sensor fit the hole.
Just use EVERYTHING from your 01 motor on the 98-96 motor, and besides the knock sensor your be fine, and ahead a lot of money. This is what I'm doing here SOON.

98+ had the stronger connecting rods
ok, i got a 98 sunfire GT. im hearin a bad knock, i think its tha c-rod. neways, going 2 the junkyard soon. just looking for a replacement motor, COULD i throw a 99+ LD9 in there with minor modification? im worried bc the local junkyard doesnt like to keep those motors handy.
As long as you use your cars injectors and sensors all will be fine. The only difference that will cause a small problem is the different size knock sensor.
Yes you can. Done this. You will need to drill and tap the knock sensor hole for your knock sensor already in your car. It has a bigger hole.

how would one go about putting the 96-98 engine in a 2001 as far as the knock sensor goes?
does anyone know wat size of helicoil u need to use a pre 99 motor in a 99
You can order inserts from

not really a 99.5 my car was built in october of 98 as a 99 model year and it had no EGR had the high impedance injectors
unless you got a 99 that was built between july/august and october theres only a couple months of this 98 style 99s out there.
from what i have seen is any 99 the came from ohio was the NON egr type no idea if another plant built the others to purge out stock
JBO since July 30, 2001
No 99 J-bodies had EGR or Low Impedance Injectors. N-bodies are a different sorry.

yeah the debate for the 99 will never end. i just say 96-98 and 99-02 any more just to stop the confusion.
you ask 10 people on their thoughts of the 99 and you'll 15 different stories, so...

you cant get low impedence injectors for the 99, I have yet to see a GM computer that says otherwise, now the 2200(2.2) 99 had both injectors, 99 2.4 were all high impedence injectors you also have a difference in the heads, thats why proven to be better to have 96-98 head on 99-02 block, 99 2.2 also have egr, but I still have yet to find egr on a 99(doesnt mean there isnt any),ECU doesnt really matter as you can tune both engine to run in any of those years.

99 was a bastard year for all js ... and 99.5 does apply in some cases... but not when it comes to the 2.4
The fun part about a 99 z24 is finding a gauge cluster.
99 is the first year they went digital odometer, 98 was analog and 00+ had a BCM.
Whats even funner is trying to find a 99 z24 5speed cluster.
Ive been looking for a couple years and 1 just finally popped up on ebay.
"Oil Leak ? What oil Leak ? Oh, Thats Just The Sweat From All The HorsePower!!"
Well if you come across a 99 Z24 auto. Let me know. I have been looking on and off for a few years now.

i remember a few years back, someone had 99 toyota cavalier cluster for sale... knowing this, that must have been an ultra-rare part... It was digital, but the mileage was stored in the cluster.
^^^ some 98's came with a digi odo as well, it was a rare option.... the only one my 98 did not come with. i believe it had to be made during the ladder half of that particular build year in order to get it. it would have had to have had it stored in the cluster, too... right?

My 98 has a digital cluster, most 98s I saw come through the dealer had the digital cluster as well. I have worked on 99 2.4s that had EGR and low impedence injectors.
