Just a quick question. Does anyone know why the cobalt ecotecs are rated at I believe 148 hp? I know they are the same engine as the j-body ecotecs so where is the extra performance from? tuning? or did they just rate them lower in the j-body for some reason? I searched but could not find anything on this and thought it may shed some light on how to get some easy hp...
I don't know, if anything it should be rated lower. They put less aggressive cams in the 06+ ecotec 2.2's.
Might have something to do with how the SAE changed the way manufacturers rate horsepower?
I seem to remember hearing somethign about the pistons skirts? having a special coating to reduce friction...
either way its 8 hp at the crank.. thats nothing
Its from the lack of a power steering pump on the drive belt. They have electric steering.

That's okay, I would rather not have the drive-by-wire setup anyway heh.
I would bet that it is a combination of the things that Publikdstrbnce, 99redz24 and Darkstars said.
I have an 07 LS Cobalt and it feels quicker than when my wife's Sunfire was stock.
It is 148hp and 155lbs torque vs 140hp and 150lbs torque.
What the change was to add the extra hp is unknown to me.
I guess the tb is larger like what the last post said.
I forgot to mention she has an 03 Sunfire 2.2 Ecotec.
Which equals about 128whp vs.120whp,not much of a difference.

yeah but 8 whp is around what a good header would give you right? I mean by itself its not huge but on top of everything else.. well it all adds up... so then is it mainly the larger tb? because from what I have read there has been a lot of debate on wether or not those help or hurt performance on our ecotecs. I have yet to see any dyno or track proven gains for a larger tb on an otherwise stock motor or even a motor with intake/exhaust. If anyone knows of any proof please direct me to it, and I will be getting a larger tb shortly...
they have different ignition setups, and different factory tune to make up the loss from the not so aggressive cams.
