Dumb question i know but im curious

Alright I was talking to my dad about the AEM intake and all, he mentioned how would it do in winter.. well I figured it would be fine unless I get buried in snow where the filter had no way to get air around it. He mentioned how to much cold air could hurt performance like on his 89 suburban, he'd run the air cleaner upside down but turn it back over for winter.. All I could think of is, well that's carburetor.. would our cars seriously have any problems with it? Would it be better for the filter to be located in engine bay? Sorry for my stupidity on this subject lol this is more just a curiosity question since everyone I know around here who have got AEM intakes all just got there last spring lol.

I used to do that same thing with my V-8 Camaro but I see no problems with running the CAI in the winter other than I would think the filter would get a little nastier in crap weather.

"how to much cold air could hurt performance" - cold air does not hurt performance ever. Colder air is denser, you take in more air and so cold air is good for performance. In the case of his 89 suburban - since the air is denser then he is now running leaner. He simply needs to retune his carberator as the weather changes. The same is true if he drives in different altitudes. He could tune it perfect to run in Colorado... only to find that it isn't tuned so good in Florida.

I've never heard of this "part throttle" before. Does it just bolt on?

I believe he is worried about hydrolock which should not be a problem ,more cold air introduced is fine although when the IAT reads that the car runs richer which is better than lean but too much is not.

if your going to use your cai in winter you better buy a damn good filter. i'm running a aem short ram on my 2.4. last november i ended up doing an engine swap. when i pulled th intake off the breather tube was full of water from sucking the fine snow that you get blasted with when following or meeting semi trucks. it's a PITA but every fall when it starts to snow i put the stock intake back on. and if your wondering why i had 2 do the swap b/c that same intake sucked in too much dust on the gravel raods where i live. when you use 5 litres of oil in 5000kms its time to do something about it. i'm not trying to tell any one that if they buy one they're going to screw their engine, just to be careful and invest in a quality filter. i personally reccomend Apexi Dual funnel filters. they have been proven to give some of the biggest gains and let the least crap into the engine. that's what i'm running and it kicks a$$
