Few questions On Ecotec Detenation, A/F ratios, and power
Monday, September 10, 2007 11:28 AM

Alright after doing some datalogging and realizing how much different the gear ratios in my MT5 tranny is compared to the MK7 I was used to racing on, I found I wasnt even pushing my ecotec to its potential. But thats a different story

Im getting a major misfire above 5500rpms, I have my advance set to 26max

I got a misfire here (ignore the 2 middle colums)
Spark ADV Ignore A/F Ignore RPM
22.4 314 1.784 0 6039
23.8 307 1.745 0 6066
24.8 307 1.725 0 5895*
19.6 343 2 0 6145
21 322 1.941 0 6216
23.1 322 1.863 0 6111*
24.5 286 1.569 0 6200
22.4 300 1.647 0 6246
19.6 279 1.549 0 6136*
25.6 293 1.588 0 6317
20.3 286 1.608 0 6350
25.2 279 1.549 0 6276*
20.3 279 1.451 0 6374
23.8 271 1.51 0 6399
*Misfire
I couldnt imagine the advance being to much. This was my first pull, 2nd pull did the same but ended up collapsing a plug. I do not have a knock sensor.
The A/F numbers represent what my Innovate WB Voltage is I believe, I do not know what that converts to but im sure its mid 13s.

What should the A/F be for the ecotec? Ive heard alot of different numbers but no one knows for sure.
What about the spark advance? Should I back that off? I am running 92 octane.
Computer is a Megasquirt controlling spark and fuel.
If I am missing some information let me know and I will post it

How much knock are you getting?

Is it audible?

How are you doing the logging?

no i havent heard the knocking but its enough to close the spark plug gap (again).

Megasquirt has a program that does it and puts it into mircosoft excel format.

i dont think detonation alone can close a spark plug... check your compression.. and even if thats good you may have a ringland missing

Compression is 210psi, and within 5psi of all the others...

Does everything else look ok?

You say 26* deg max timing, is that what you have on your map or are you including the 10* base timing
you get with the obd1 ignition module?

maybe 26 is too much in your situation. i know it is for mine. im running an N/A setup. spark advance is set at 25*. 1 more * and i start to see knock on HPT datalogging. i dont know if the knock is legit or if its phantom knock.

my afr were at ~13.5 but now i set it at 12.7. Strangely the richer A/F,12.7, made the car alot faster than a 13.5 a/f. i guess ecos like it rich. try to richen it out a bit. hope this helps.

^ thats the info im looking for. thanks enthusiast. Do you have any tables that u think would do me any good? When u said u were getting knock were you getting any misfires?

Robbie c,

I dont think thats an issue with it. orginally when i started messing with spark advance i had an advance around 12 for the 800-2500 rpm range. The car wouldnt move and didnt have any power, I bumped that up to around 18 or so and it took off great after that. Where did you find out about that extra 10 degrees? From what I know the OBD1 module doesnt do anything at all with timing PAST 500 rpms, its all relayed to Megasquirt (or in a stock case, to the stock ecm)

Thanks guys
