I want to get a small hood scoop, attach a filter on it, and maybe see if I can figure a way to make a fan to blow cooler air to my Ram intake that I will soon be installing. I know that Ram intakes have an issue with only getting hot air from the engine, so I thought this might be a way to cool it off a bit without having to move my battery to the trunk and making a CAI.
I want the design to look like the stock eclipse hood:
I am having a little trouble finding a small hood scoop about the size of that bump. It pretty much needs to look like this:
but waaay smaller for just on the right side by my short ram. All the ones I can find are huge and designed to go in the center of the hood, plus they're hundreds of dollars...
I want to know if anyone has one for sale or if anyone knows where I can get one, and also: Is this even a good idea? Will I have a problem with water getting into the intake like a CAI? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? I plan on driving this car in rain and winter...
I can put a cover on it during winter or something so no snow melts and gets into the engine bay...
I can buy a battery cover so no water gets to the battery if that is an issue too? I'm most worried about water getting into the intake.

you could always get the scoop you like if u don't find a smaller one, your gonna have to fab it in some how so why not cut a few inches out right down the middle to make it the right size. as far as the fan they have the electric "supercharger" that does basically what your asking, but as far as watter i would for sure find a way to block any water from getting near that filter. they also have the marine battery boxes you could use to keep water off that but i don't think that a big issue
Yea, I was thinking about that, that might work. Just take out the excess in the middle. Still don't know about the water though *sigh*

I was bored in school and started drawing while I thought of this hood scoop thing, the hood scoop on this crappy drawing is what I want:

Instead of a scoop, you could make a NACA duct. If made properly, it'll probably get more air to the filter than a scoop ever will.
Obviously this isn't a J, but here's how it would be set up, with the duct leading to the filter:

if your setup looks like that, I would get a deeper naca duct to get more air.
imo, naca ducts are superior to scoops when you figure overall dynamics of a air scoop

when you beat someone in a civic people wine and make excuses
when you beat someone in a cavalier they pull over and check under thier hoods
So this BSR naca duct should work and it's not out of my price range, the only other problem is protecting the Intake from the elements. Any thoughts? Because in that setup, it looks like some snow or rain could go straight to the intake, especially if its storming and I'm trying to get home on the freeway. Maybe there would be a way to make a cover to go over the open part on the inside of the hood...

"If the air cleaner element is in place, it will generally prevent debris from entering the engine, although such detritus can quickly clog the air filter. Many scoops for vehicles intended for street use have drainage channels to prevent water from entering the engine, although the channels may be overwhelmed in heavy rain."

Is there any way to build one of these? It's probably really simple, but I can't find any pictures of one or a diagram or anything online... I guess you could maybe make a tube that curves down, around, and out to drain the water, then have a few holes on top of the tube so the air can get out and flow through another tube to the intake...

on my way home tonight i saw an old ass 300zx probably late 80's model that had almost the exact scoop your talkin abot on the drivers side. something like this..........

I was gonna say, thats gonna be alot of work for barely any gains... but i didnt wanna say anything because i thought you might know, which turns out, you do know that this wont give you barely any gains...
Forget the CAI, forget the exhaust, do straight to boost!!!

hahaha!! I would, but I want to keep the car a daily driver. I'm still in highschool and can barely afford crap gas, much less premium. I think it would be fun to get all the airflow as good as I can get it, exhaust, intake, upgrade the ignition, and then get like a 35 shot of spray. Just for kicks get the ZEX dual purge kit under the wheel wells with blue LED purge lighting. Rice-tacular, but whats the point if you're not having fun?

How much Horsepower to the Neons add? With the scoop and neons you would be unbeatable at race wars!

Those premade ducts aren't properly made. They need to have sharp edges on the side walls so the air flowing directly into the duct will effectively pull in more air with it, and they also need to have a straight exit into the hood, not the round exit like the premade one's have. That one in the previous pic is pretty well made, although the ramp should start at exactly the same level as the hood, and the straight back edge should be curved into the duct, like the one pictured below.
