how to spot a HO manifold for sure
Monday, August 20, 2007 12:37 AM
i have been looking around for the HO manifolds and went to the local pull-a-part today and found about 7 2.3's with the manifolds but how do i know if its a HO for sure without pulling it off to check the casting numbers? is there a way to read the vin number to tell if the car had the HO engine? i have read on quad4forums something about a vin A but not sure on the details. i have also read that the 95 2.3 TB and throttle cable bracket seems to work the best and i found 3 95 cars so should i grab the TB and bracket from one if i cant find a HO manifold? i am doing this swap on a 98 cavalier 2.4.

the log part of the HO intake is bigger. click on my profile then click on the link for the quad 4 forums. thats a how to for this swap. in there i think there is a pic comparing both intakes.

First of all, if you find any 1995 J-body with a stock original 2.3 in it, it's not going to have an HO manifold, all the J's came with LO manifolds. The most easy and quickest way to tell a LO manifold from an HO manifold is that you can fit your fingers between the runners of a LO, but it's dang near impossible to fit them between the runners of the HO. Also, if you find an old 2.3 in a Grand Am or something, and it says High Output on the IDI cover, the car will most likely have a HO manifold. Not all Quad 4's where HO, a few HO motors came with LO manifolds for some reason, and I'm pretty sure J-bodies all had the LO version.

Either way, a LO will work just as good as an HO anyway, espectially if your N/A.

8TH digit in the vin is an "A" .. its that easy..LO is a "D" and yes the TB in the 95 J is the same and has the bracket

well i'm pretty sure then that all the ones i found are LO manifolds since i could get my finger between the runners. i am going back there in a few days to grab some neon rear disc brakes that i saw and will check the vins while i'm there. the 95 that i found wasa grand am so would that still have the tb bracket that works best with the cavalier throttle cables?

if it wasnt powder coated i'd be more interested in it. do you have the fontana flange or what? i havent heard of an adapter gasket just the flange thing that chris makes.

What would it take to get you to dyno test the intake swap. I want to see if it actually adds any hp and if so where at with some before and after dyno graphs. I would even send you ten bucks through paypal. There might be a few other people interested enought to do the match that just to see the difference.

Another thing to think about is that the LO and HO manifolds weigh more by far than the stock plastic one.

I would be interested to see if there was any difference.

A plus to the HO would be durability for direct port nitrous..

if someone paid for the dyno time and found somewhere close by for me to have it done i'd be more than happy to provide dyno results for before and after a HO swap. I'm betting dyno time isn't cheap and i personally have alot more things i want to spend my cash on right now(like paint) to justify doing it. I figure it has to add some HP from all the people i've talked to about the swap plus it looks 100% better that the stock intake IMO.

People have been debating if this swap really makes any performance differences or not forever. Peronally, I'de at least install some secret cams with the manifold, your sure to get a performance increase that way. Whenever I put my manifold on or cams in I'll let ya know how much of a difference there is. Right now there just taking up room on my table.

Ya a LO or HO manifold is heavier, but it looks better, sounds a lot cooler, and frees up space making it easier to replace your alternator, and work on your fuel system. The only real downfall is having to find a creative way to re-route your air filter so it doesn't suck in hot air coming off the radiator, and your battery is pretty much directly in the way. Countless people have found several ways around that already, so there's not really any reason not to to it besides lack of wanting to, or the money it costs to do it.

There are 5 HO manifolds for auction on ebay.
One is selling with the 2.3 tb.
