Its finally time...
Thursday, June 28, 2007 8:40 PM
After months of talking about it and reading about it and buying parts and taking it to the machine shop Im ready to put on my 086 head. Just a few quick questions.

I remember reading about 2.3 head bolts being shorter...do I use them or the 2.4 bolts?

Also which gaskets are reusable? I definitely remember reading somewhere that some of them were reusable but cant rember which ones and the set is a bit pricy(I still need to buy the gaskets and Im getting a new water pump too while its all apart).

Ok thats what I was thinking. Now are the gaskets for the cam housings and side pan reusable? Thats what I thought I read.

I believe the 2.3L head bolts have a different diameter or thread pitch, so you wouldn't be able to use them. Are you strictly staying NA or do plan for boost in the future? Because if you are planning for boost (or even if you want to make your NA setup even more reliable) I would spend the extra money and get 2.4L ARP studs. That's what I did.

The cam tower gaskets should be ok to reuse. Just check for any wear or tear on them.

By "side pan," are you refering to the "timing chain housing"? And if so, are you asking about the gasket that goes between the housing and the block...or between the housing and the thin black cover? The one between the engine block and the housing you can probably get away with, but if the black timing cover gets bent but a little, the stock gasket won't seal. I would definately get a thick Felpro for that.

Regardless, though, I bought all new Felpro gaskets to be on the safe side, so that I wouldn't run into any gasket leaks requiring me to tear the motor back apart. If I were to do it all again, I would only change the head gasket to the Cometic.

Brian to the rescue. Thanks again! Ok I will spend the money for the timing chain housing gasket...thats an expensive gasket to buy if it were reusable thats why I was asking. Ill get the studs when I redo the bottom end next spring and probably a Cometic head gasket. For now its felpro lol.

By the way anyone have a spare LO intake cam I could buy? Not the one from the secret cams but the actual LO cam without the cam sensor.

I have an intake cam from a 90-94 LO motor with the pulley still attatched that I would be willing to sell.
