i know you have to mod the intake cam for the ps and such but got a ? about using the 2.3 cam tower bottom and using the 2.4 cam tower top and being able to get away from machining the whole 2.4 cam tower for the 35mm lifters
You will HAVE to machine the intake tower. The cam hits the tower otherwise PLUS when using larger lifters it gives you higher RPM reliability.
so you are saying regardless if i use the 2.3 bottom and the 2.4 top it will still need to be modded, i dont have either of the towers apart yet so i havent been able to have a look to see whats what
anyone know besides for measuring the lift/duration of how to tell if a set of cams are the HO ones for sure?

I had the same idea before, but after getting 2.3L towers, I came to the realization that there is absolutely no way around maching the towers. The 90-94 quad 4 towers have no bolt holes on the power steering side, and no surface to just drill and tap for the bolt hole. You would have to add material to the end of the bottom 2.3l tower, have the material cut for both the curvature of the cam and to match the surface of the top half 2.4L cam tower so that oil doesn't squirt all over the place.
And besides all of that, the gasket between the halves of the cam towers for the 2.4L fits in the top half and the gasket between the halves in the 2.3L fits in the bottom half...so with a 2.4L top and 2.3L bottom: you would at least need to have one of the two halves welded and milled to straightness.
Far more work in my eyes than just boring out 8 lifter holes and running a saturn cam sync generator.

There is no other way. HO and LO cams share the same casting number.

i asked this ques like a yr ago and got shot down with the iron fist lol, the 2.3 and 2.4 gasket is different so it doesnt match up the halves. just look into the machiening costs of it all and work a couple saturdays and ull be good to go
, also no need for cam sync, just unplug the cps, wrench monkey tried it out once as well as i and the car ran fine all day as well as the next, im also running 320cc injectors and had no prob with it. im not running the ho cams as of yet it was all tried with secret cams but the sensor was left hangin unplugged

I'm not quite sure what Monkey is talking about, because I am looking at a full 2.3L cam tower (top and bottom) and it looks no taller from the top of the camshaft to the top of the housing than a 2.4L cam tower. To my understanding, it is only the lifter barrels that are the issue, because otherwise the cam hits the edge of the barrel on the bottom half of a stock 33mm 2.4L tower.

I work at Napa and you can order brand new intake and exhaust cams intake is like $86 and exhaust is $160 . intake measures 410. along with the exhaust.
why such a huge price difference, thats crazy would be nice if both intake and exhaust were 86 a piece
paul i need to intake cams plz... oh u accidently subbed one intake for an exhaust wow wow thank u sir
edit to my last post "i need 2 (not to) intake cams plz"
lol Just head to your local Napa I just started so i don't wanna be doing anything like that right now lol.

Monkey was getting at the fact that you cant mix and match the intake tower halves to get it to work, you HAVE to have the 2.4 tower machined, if you plan on keeping your PS setup.

OK...Good
As long as we are all on the same page

ok, next item to be brought up.
is it possible to just convert the 2.3 ps pump to the 2.4 lines/rack?? how hard is it?
What i meant was that the lobe on the cam will hit the cam tower when its spinning. (ho cam in a unmodded 2.4 tower) But if you bore out the 2.4 tower it gives you the abiliity to run the ho cam.
PLUS the lifters are cheaper if you use the 2.3 lifters
will using the HO cams create too much lift for the stock 2.4 pistons and run the risk of hitting valves?? i know the 2.3 ho pistons have valve reliefs in them, but im assuming that is so because of the 086 head's high compression.

It is as simple as fabricating a small bracket to adapt the 2.3L pump brackets. Merlin did it on his hybrid and it is uber easy.

All Quad 4 heads seat the valves closer to the piston because of their 48cc combustion chamber (not just the 086 head), which would cause the valves to hit a flat top piston. With the 60cc LD9 head, the valves are seated higher and don't run into that problem. So, if you are running a 2.3L head, then yes the valves will most likely hit a flat top piston. If you are running a 2.4L head, then your valves won't hit.

so they do sell the HO cams at NAPA, even the intake cam. What about the secret cams? Can anyone show how to modify the 2.4L towers to accompany the HO cams, or all I have to do is bore the lifters holes and run one of those Saturns cam position generator, oh yeah and machine in a hex at the end of the intake cam for the power steering, Is this right? If so I bore the lifters holes to accept the 2.3 lifters or what?
GMR has got nothing on this
the 'secret' 90-94 LO exhaust cam is readily available at basically every parts house, for around $120.00.
the only place to buy the intake cam brand new is though gm, last i checked it was $350.00.
wow, i had no idea converting to the 2.3 PS pump was so easy, i actually have a 2.3 ps assembly and everything to make it work sitting on a 94 2.3 right now.... but then again, ive also got a bad 95 intake cam with the PS hex gear inside it, could very easily use that to mod a HO intake cam to work with the 2.4 PS pump. hower much does this usually run at a machine shop?
i also would like to know whats involved in using the MSD cam sync generator... it says just hook it up to the number 4 plug wire or something... i doubt its that easy.
yeah i know you can get the exhaust cam from the parts store and the intake cam is only available from gmpartsdirect but i was asking about the HO cams, NA madness guy said the HO cams are available at NAPA, intake and exhaust.
GMR has got nothing on this
ill check on that 95 cam tomorrow.
