I wouldnt be surprised if anyone just told me to replace the motor but i just did back in January. Here are the problems im having. If you can relate and help me figure out whats going on great. I have a 2.4 with a cooling problem. In the city it starts to overheat and continues till steam starts roling out of my coolant tank almost in the red. Its almost like its not circulating. Driving its fine just stop and go it overheats. I cannot hear my fans kicking on at all so i know that one problem. Any ideas shoot it my way. Little extra..does is sound like my tranny is going out. Its manual and it grinds going into third, leaks tranny fluid quick, and gets stuck in 5th every now and then. Any advice would be nice.
tranny answer...ok well you have a 96 Izuzu tranny so the leaking is not uncommon, i've read numerous threads where leaky Izuzu's were mentioned. Sadly the main problem hasn't really been solved even when u replace the gaskets so i can't truly help you there unless you do the 00+ Getreg swap, it's very worth it. Much stronger and a better built tranny. If you are interested in it
CLICK HERE. Now the engine overheating, i get the same problem in my 96 2.2ohv. driving is fine as long as it gets air flow, but long stop lights and my car almost stalls and sputters. very uncool when ricers rev up right next to me wanting to race......bytches....
What type of coolant are you using? Flush the system and make sur the sensor in the bottom of the tank is not gummed up.
Check the thermostat it may be not operating.. Also it may be something simple like the resovoir cap not sealing correctly.
There are plenty of post over in maintenance forum, just use the search button...
I know when i replaced my motor my fans didnt work at first to and i had an over heating problem but all i had to do was turn on the heater and my fans kicked on but it sounds like your wouldnt be that simple.
It wouldnt be any fun if it was easy.
Turning your heat on does stop overheating, well, helps curb it. The coolant is piped into the cab, and much of the heat is dumped on you... So next time it overheats, crank the heat on full blast... as to your actual problems, it can be many many things... check all your seals and coolant related items.
There will always be someone faster than you, but thousands slower and dumber than you.
Check the wires of the coolant temp sesor also the connector to the fan motor if they are ok
I would replace the coolant temp sensor, it sends a signal to the PCM let it know to kick on the cooling fan.
I think the only problem is the cooling fan. If you are in stop and go traffic and your fan does not run you will over heat, regardless of how good the cooling system is. I had this problem on my 96 Z24. It was a wiring issue, had to put in a switch to turn the fan on when I want. YOu need to check the fuse for the fan (under the hood). If that is good test the fan motor relay (ground it out) fan should come on. If nothing test the motor directly with power.

Just an aside on this, this only works if your water pump is pumping properly. But then, if it wasn't, you wouldn't need to turn the heat on, because your engine would already be fried.

If your fan came one when you turned on the A/C wouldnt that mean that the relay is still good? Right now, the fan only comes on when it wants to without the a/c being on. Sometimes it comes on and then sometimes it doesnt come on.
