has anyone ever had their throttle body bored out?
if so could you tell me how much it improves your acceleration?
I have a 99' cavy i was just wondering. Thanks
i had my 2.4 one bored out to 58mm at the butterfly by a company called SMG motoring. it was $170.00 and they did a fantasic job. idk what car you have so idk if the 2.2 one can be bored or not, but for either engine... you can hit up the junk yards for a 2.3 56mm TB and they are pretty cheap, and IIRC it will for sure work on a 2.4, and i THINK ive heard of it working on the 2.2ohv as well...
good luck to ya!
I bought a stock 2.4 tb that was bored out to 58mm on ebay...$10!!
But yea I doubt youll find many deals like that. If you have a 2.4 or ohv Id look for a cheap 2.3 tb
And off which car do you get the 2.3 TB 56mm ?
Any 95 and older gm with the 2.3 quad 4. Do a quick search, youll find tons of cars with them. Doesnt matter if its a HO or a LO
89-95 2.3L Quad4:
1990-1991 Oldsmobile 442
1990-1993 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ
1994 Chevrolet Beretta Z26
1989-1995 Pontiac Grand Am
1990-1991 Pontiac Grand Prix
1989-1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais and Supreme
1992-1995 Oldsmobile Achieva SC

i hate you.
Lol, saw it on ebay under sunfire 2.4; buy was selling it for his friend who wrecked his car and said it was bored out to 58mm he thought. Got it, measured 58 at the plate. I cleaned it up and polished it up some.
If you wana be technical I didnt pay exactly $10...shipping was another $7 haha
Doesn't having a larger TB result in lower HP, and higher torque numbers?

if its anything it would be the other way around.
Hmm.. That's interesting.. I remember yeeeeears ago on the JBO there was a big debate about it and it ended with a larger TB results in lower HP and higher torque.
Anyway, maybe you could explain why it would have reverse results?

the way i always understood it was by opening up the intake side it would yield higher hp and either lose or retain the stock torque.
i dont have dyno results proving it or otherwise... so i guess you 'got me' white phatt.
naah, nobody 'got' anything.. I was just asking for my own knowledge..
Would it be safe to say, by some odd mannor of logic that if you do open the intake to yield more HP, can you then also open the exhaust to yield more torque?
Probably bad logic, but I've seen worse.

im done doing the 'guessing' game, i will just tell you my experiences.
i had header and stock dp/cat and 2.25" catback and straight pipe, can was loud and obnoxious, i decided a muffler was the way to go, put a magnaflow open-flow series on and i swear to god the car gained to life down low, it felt much more torquey. honestly, i would say this felt like the best thing i ever added to my 5spd car... go figure. i assumed it gained only torque due to backpressure.
next thing i added was a homade intake with k&n filter... car seemed to lose that 'torque' i gained but felt WAY better up top and seemed to pull after 3rd a lot better.
i then installed a centerforce clutch and engine mounts and gained that 'torquey' feel back and kept the top end.
next i put in a 2.5" mandrell bent dp and HFC and it felt exactly the same-didnt add anything at all IMO.
never got around to installing a larger TB though.
ive heard either way, more trq and less hp feeling and more hp and less trq feeling after ppl added a larger tb, more on the side of more hp and less torque though, so thats why i said what i did.

Had that happen with a UD crank pulley.
It was listed as 2.2 but it was the 2.4.
Was brand new and I got it fairly cheap.

Can a 2.3L 58mm TB fit on a Eco?
If not, I know a Saab TB will match to an eco perfectly, but I was wondering if anyone else knew of any other TB's that mount to the Eco.
Also, 58mm is the max for all NA engines?

It's my understanding that a larger TB means more air into the engine. More air flowing into the engine means more HP.
Also from what I've heard - a 56 mm TB is perfectly fine on a stock 2.4 TC, giveing better numbers off the line than the stock TB. The 58 mm TB's only really help make more hp - if the motor has pnp intake manifold & cylinder head.
btw - I've also heard of members that have 60-62mm TB on built up NA 2.4TC.

I think alot of the eco guys are using 62mm tb. I am not sure where they get them though.

i know where to get them
check under skirls thread about when he smashed his #3 plug, i think there was a link to a place that sells the HO manifold and 62mm TB for 200 somethin, ill have to check my favs when i get home for the link..

so i have a 96 sunfire 2.2 ... what TB can i use ??? would one out of a cav 2.4 work ?
some odd information in this thread...
Quad 4's (2.3L) have a 56 mm throttle body, not 58 mm. The stock ECO TB is 58 mm and the wheel is backwards compared to the 2.3/2.4 throttle bodies. Regardless though, putting on a quad throttle body would be kind-of a step backwards.
A higher air velocity at lower engine speeds typically nets a greater amount of torque. A larger throttle body slows down the velocity at lower engine speeds, but it opens up the top end usually equating to both higher torque and higher hp but at a higher rpm. Much of it depends on the flow characteristics of the engine (head, cams, manifold design, etc).
Remember, power is just a simple function of torque and rpm. Therefore, if you have more air in the cylinder at a given rpm, you can make both higher torque and horsepower.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.
^^^^ Well put. The bottom line is, don't waste alot of money on this "upgrade", I quote upgrade because personally, I don't think a larger TB equates to anything worth smiling about.
so i am better off going with a 2.3 TB then a 2.4 ?
^^^ or just keep your stock one

What about the 62mm TB from MRZ performance? Looks like a solid piece.
