Hey guys i am kinda torn here. have been for a while. I know the 2.2 OHV is a roach engine, but i know with alot of the right mods it CAN produce decent numbers, i would like to be one of the few to do this. However, i am tempted to just swap to a 2.4. my question is, what would be the least expensive? Modding the 2.2 OR buying a 2.4 used engine, swapping it and then building it? Any opinions would help..thank you.
swap in an eco
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
well really...its a tuff one. Swap and then build the engine up ect..or keep the engine you have and build it up..it will be cheaper but might net less power..so first you have to ask what your goals are and where you plan on going with the car. The 2.4 and eco both are good canadates but require a bit of work to put in. Nice thing about 2.2's are they are a dime a dozen and if you blow yours its super cheap cause most people will give them away.lol..
Roach motor huh? Hurry up and swap.

Is the information i just came across correct? the injectors in the OHV are useless with forced induction and cannot be upgrades or need to be custom fabbed?

If you run low boost (max ~7psi on stock head), the stock injectors can be worked with using FPR and FMU.
If you have a stand-alone (Megasquirt with V3.0 ignition driver circuit works), you can use Saturn TBI injectors and an FMU.
Otherwise you need to convert to top-feed.

Swapping in an Eco in your case would WELL exceed the cost of either building up the 2.2 or swapping in the 2.4. Your car being a 97, you'd have to get a donor car that came with the Eco, and essentially put every single wire from the donor car (taillights all the way to headlights, all dash wiring, etc.) to make it work. You can thank GM and their BCM for that. As for whether to build the 2.2 or swap in a 2.4, I would say the 2.4, there is more aftermarket for it, and it has more potential for power than the 2.2.
i'm with greg on this one. i bought my LD9 engine 2 omnths or so ago and i'm building it up as well. right off the bat, just from swapping it's a 30-35 hp gain over the 2.2. and with some simple bolt ons you can gain anywhere from 15-20 hp easily onto that. and going a little more indepth like where i'm taking mine (search 086 head swap) you can see gains of anywhere from 60 to 70 hp at the wheels. and that's all motor. if you want forced induction (which would be cheaper) you can see marjonal gains for less expensive then going all motor. so really it's up to where and what you want the speed for.
not that im a performance guy by any means, but why not get a 2.4, build it up crazy outside the car while running the OHV, and when you get the 2.4 ready to rip, swap it in then??
that would be my approach.
I believe eazy has a point there.....perhaps that is what i shall do as long as my g/f doesnt mind the engine in our living room haha
I just like to open this topic again, coz I have the same dilemma.
what if you don't have a choice but to use the 2.2L engine(I don't like them saying sell it and get a civic)??? I have an injen intake and header already. what do I have to do next?cams?pistons? my cav ran alread a 173k kilometer already and i feel like I'm running slow already, I replaced the clutch already and stil the same. Do i need a top overhaul or what? thanks guys, any reply would be greatly appreciated.
Swap the engine...about the same as the comment "DO A BARREL ROLL!"
Everyone says it except the ones who have modded the ohv. It depends on what you're looking to put down, if its 200-300hp, you might as well stick with the LN2.

Get the full exhaust done, preferably 2.25-2.5". Past that, boost it (unless going specifically for N/A). Once you do this, get a stage 2 clutch. I didn't have a choice either and I'm actually quite happy with the results.

Ive got all the basic bolt ons on my car, and some mild headwork done. It pulls a great deal more than it did stock, and with all the boltons. It isn't "fast" but its definitely formidable.
Im sure that If I upgraded the lifters/valve springs and got a "boost" cam and threw a turbo on it people would think it was something other than that "roach" motor.
I would say build the LN2, as it is probably the easiest motor in J's to work on (hell a headswap took me about an hour), and it has 1/2 the parts of a DOHC motor (8 valves/springs, etc; 1 cam, less timing equipment). You also can't beat the "dime a dozen" either.
I say all of this but I'm planning for an ECO swap in the future lol (I just gotta have my whine
)
