But like I said, that sheet doesn't show the ld9 head flow, hence my question.
looking at a LD9 head next to a 955 head, i say there about the same.
the LD9 has smaller ports on the exhasut side though.

So the 456 head is higher flowing than the LD9 in your opinion? Comparing the 456 next to the 086 up there shows that the 456 flows better than the 086 at a lower lift, and is fairly close where there is higher lift. Maybe with a little porting it could come close to the 086? The reason I am asking is because I have come across a 456 head in decent condition, and it would be nice to throw it on an LD9 for a HC setup.....
So the 955 head is similar to the LD9 head?
Also wondering which motors have the 456 head? Which ones have the 955 head?
I had thought that all Quad 4 motors had the 086 head?

No, the 086 head is much more of a rarity when it comes to quad 4 heads. the 955 and 456 were much more common. I must know though, does the 456 head flow a lot better than the LD9 head???? There has to be a flowbench for the LD9 somewhere.

Pshhhhh NO......
Well, maybe......
FINE BRAD, yeah it did. But we are contemplating on what to do with it. If it flows decent we are thinking a cheap HC motor in a gutted berretta or cav for some fun. Possibly a group project.
Team NWIA? lmfao im in
i have a 96 grand am with a blown 2.4, need a title tho.... also have a 95 base model cav that needs a new powerplant then of course, theres my black 97 z that wants reborn
paul should put it on his car lmao... itd be like 13.1 compression hahhaha then it would be a n/a madness beast for SURE. too bad it would need c16 to run hahahha
what cars did the 456 and 955 came on?

I know they came on Grand Am's.....
I think paul should get a .146 headgasket from vac, to bump his cr down to 9.3 or so, and run 19 psi for a 475hp monster.......
But then he would have to change his damn sticker, and he won't go for that.
well i can tell you first hand that the ports are alot bigger on a 456 head than a ld9
Here here here is the thread i recentaly did about this exact swap
alos its to my understanding that a 456 head is what GM used to replaec the 086 when the 086 cracked.. and i believe the 955 head is on the LO motors.. please some one correct me if i am wrong, because there is a big chance i am.
Thank you RyZ! I hope you get it running decent enough to get some numbers! Keep us informed for sure.
So let me get the straight - the 456 & 086 heads are found on the HO Quad 4s, while the 955 head is found on the regular Quad 4.
And since the LD9 is based off the regular Quad 4 the 955 head is similar to the LD9 head.
Am I reading thing right.
955= 1987-1991(?)
086=1992-1993(?)
753=1993-1994
456= 1995
The 955 head was the small valve, low lift, HUGE port head. It's been said that it can be made to perform quite nicely with extensive work.
The 753 was a 086 replacement, there were also other casting numbers. the 086 being the holy grail of heads. (I just recenly aquired a race prepped 086 for some machine work)
the 456 head is the "last" of the Quad heads, found on the 1995 2.3L (my stock head was a 456)
While it doesn't flow to the 086 specs, the 753 head is the closest thing you will find, and can be ported to just about match the 086.
I just happen to have another 955 head laying around (hint, hint)

the car is actually back up and running again.. i still need to get it on the dyno for some tuning, but the motor swap cut my funds so its going to be a couple weeks before i get it on the dyno again... the car feels great, super strong but i feel the tune is killing the power.. you can feel it die up top like anything above 4500rpms...and really without any dyno tuning there is no way i can tell if i'm helping or hurting my car. lol

NONONONONONONONO
90-92 ONLY Quad-4 COULD COME WITH the 086 head, both the 753 and 086 heads where used, after all the problems with the 086 heads cracking between the valves, (also had larger valves.) GM discontinued it.
do some searching on google.... well worth the time.
if you really want a all out high reving high compression quad head, get the 086 head.

Yes, I still realize that the 086 is the best head. My question is whether the 456 head will outflow an LD9. Which one flows the best stock and ported?

instead of google, go to the quad4forums.
I wasn't positive on the dates, I pulled them from memory, hence the question marks. but the Q4F has all the answers.

Ok, the short answer... yes. any Quad-4 head ( not the SOHC ) will out flow a LD9 head.
HOWEVER.
Speedracer, walks all over my 92 GTZ and i got the 92 086 head and biger cams........ so porting a LD9 head....... just may be worth your time.
