2.4 LD9 swap questions...
Monday, February 12, 2007 9:19 PM
ok, i have a 96 2.2L OHV 5 speed MT sunfire and i'm looking for more balls for my car, and the most promising thing to me is buying a 2.4 LD9 from a GT or Z24. my questions are; are the GT and Z24 engine the exact same ( keeping in mind we are compairing two 1998/1999). I read somewhere that on this site that it is more complicated to swap in a 00+ LD9 due to electrical wiring changed. if this is wrong, please someone correct me cuz i'm having trouble finding used Z24's and GT's pre 00+ around where i live. I am looking to re-build the LD9 and the usual intake and catback exhaust, port and polish, headers ect, ect.... all in all when i'm done i'm looking for upwards of 200 hp at the wheels. now my final question is, how much easier is it to swap in the LD9 over the ecotec? thanks for all the help in advance. any input is greatly appreciated.

1. Don't know in late 99 somethings were changed on the ld9's.
2. On 2000+ ld9's you would have to do some rewiring.
3. Some people have done it on this site, all I know that u would need all the wiring from eco and the engine mounts aren't the same.( I think) im not sure about the mounts.
Good Luck

I swapped from a 97 2.2 to a 99 2.4... The last part of the 99 motors dont have the egr, mine dont..

Yeah, on a 2000+ youll have to pull out your old in dash 96 harness since the 2000's are digital amongst other things.

Just because the engine is a 00+, doesnt mean you need to run 00+ electronics. The engines are all basicly the same, only 'real' change is the 99+ have a smaller hole for the Knock Sensor to bolt into. This is not a problem, since you can drill and tap the block to fit the old style KS.

Otherwise ALL 2.4 LD9's are the same, N-body, J-body, Chevy, Olds, Pontiac....... all the same.

But i keep reading that if i swap the engine that i will need to replace the dash and cluster since they use digital odometers now. but i don't wanna swap the cluster cuz i like how easy it is to take off my needles in my cluster. any ideas?

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT ECM AND WIRE HARNESS YOU USE, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ENGINE ITSELF

Pull that from a 97-99, and your set.

ok, so i found a couple 2.4L from some 2000's and 01's. the down side is they are all automatic and 4 speeds. can i just get the ecu and tranny from a 98 5speed manual to go with the automatic engine to make it standard? or is there more involved with making a change like that?

Engines aren't automatic or standard, transmissions are. There is no difference between an auto car's engine and a manual car's engine.

^^^what he said^^^

and with that, it will be easier for you to go with a 95-99 Isuzu 5 speed, since thats what you have in your car already (you just need the right trans for the engine)... but the 00+ 5 speed trans is better in my opinion, but you need a welder to get it in, and buy more parts.... and a 97-99 engine harness should plug right into your car's body harness, with no other mods.....

all in all, its a pretty straight forward swap. Could have it done in a day.

well i have a mig welder, so we're good on that part. is there any chance you could point me in the direction of any site or info that might let me know what the other odds and ends are for putting a 00+ tranny with the new engine? Because i'm hoping to do the swap in june or july, but buy the engine in may and just build it up while it's on a stand. thanks for all the help guys. I am new to cars and the help is making this process alot lighter on my mind.

ok so let me know if i have this right. i can get a 00+ LD9 from either a Z24 or GT and get the ECU from a 5speed manual and wiring harness from a pre 2000 J, and a tranny from any new 00+ J but i will have to make my own mounts. is this correct? or are there bellhousing differences between the getreg and izuzu trannies?

yeah, that's right i brought this back from the dead...What exactly is the difference between the 96-98 izuzu tranny and getreg 99+ 5 speeds .... mounts, bell housing...what else am i missing to make the newer tranny fit?

YES! Dude! I would sooo swap mine out if there was a relatively straight forward way to accomplish it!

I'm down to 4 posts for this month so my replies will be slim to none..

I swaped my engine one year ago, I have a 99 cavalier and i took the engine from a 99 sunfire but i had to change harness, ECU and transmission.

ok even simpler question and very straight forward. will a 00+ 5 speed from a LD9 bolt up directly to a 98 LD9 engine with no problems? like common guys, i'm on the home stretch of swapping in the engine all i need to know about is the tranny.

honestly, what do you think?? its a little common sence... Speed racerz Already said that all LD9's are the same besides the knock sensor issue. what do you think about the tranny.
if you can't understand it then you really shouldn't be doing this swap by yourself

dude, i'm just getting all my facts straight, i'm not gonna go buy something if i'm not 100% sure about it. theres nothing wrong with double, even tripple checking. no flamming needed.

Yes, the 00+ F23 M86 Getrag from a 2.4 will bolt to a 96-99 2.4 (and even a 88-95 Quad 4 2.3)

The F23 Getrag will NOT however bolt into a 95-99 J-body w/o some welding. There are numerous posts in the trans forum about this swap.

thank you very much john, and brian. that is all the information i needed to know to complete my swap. Originally i was thinking about doing the NVG550 swap but i decided not to since i'm no expert when it comes to transmissions, so something more straight forward was in call. thanks again.

wow....okay i found 8 2001 transmissions from Z24 5 speeds in my area for under $350 (canadian) now if the price is this low, would there be something wrong with them? because when i was offered the tranny from the 98 GT sunfire i got my engine from, the guy was gonna give it to me for 700 and he said that was a deal....weren't the pre 99 izuzu's @!#$?

Re: 2.4 LD9 swap questions...

I wouldn't pay more than $350 for a used transmission... and even then, it better have a 3 month warranty on it. $700? That's a rip off, unless it's a used performance trans.. then it's worth it for the parts in it.

I can get Ecotec's around here for $300 easy... if there's lots of supply, and little demand, the price goes down...
