i have a 98 cavalier z24 and i have been having a problem with it wanting to cut out like its not wanting to rev up to accelerate when trying to take off after it has sat for an extended time. It only happens like when i leave the house or a parking lot i have just been in for 20 minutes or so. The car runs perfect once it does its sputtering thing untill i shut it off the next time, it's kinda like trying to take off in 5th gear of something and then all of a sudden it kicks in and runs fine. I bought the car used and wrecked but i know the girl i got it from and she said its done it since she bought the car with 22k miles on it and has had it to all kinds of shops that cant figure it out.It seems to me that it is not get fuel at first take off kinda like the fuel pressure bleeds off while sitting or i'm wondering if it could be something to do with the clutch? If anyone has any ideas what might cause this of some ideas of what to check i would love to hear from you. Sorry for the novel but its hard to describe the problem in words.
And the car throws no codes or ses lights and shows nothing when scanned.
My Buick with the good old 2.2 does this and I was told it was the idle air control that needed replacing but I havnt tried to fix it yet so I dont know for sure. It definitely makes you want to jump out and kick the car or somthing....very annoying.
Yeah I got the same problem. I replaced pretty much everything to try and fix this. Fuel pump, spark plugs, Coil pack, (used though) Idle air control valve, O2 senors, and nothing. Every once in a while, the computer will throw a code saying that the catalyst threshold in below normal (like my catalyst converter is clogged up). But I had an exhaust guy look at my catalyst converter and he said it wasn't clogged up or anything, and I even looked at it, and it still looked new. So IDK.
But when you find out what it was causing your car to do this, Please inform me.
or vice versa. I just about had enough with my Z24.
Mine has been doing that for a couple of years now. The car will drop rpm's and almost stall out then it will jump to about 1100 and slowly fall till 900 and almost stall again. Mine tends to do it a couple of times before i can drive away i just got used to it.
Mine has fallen on its face many a times till it has warmed up. I also replace EVERYTHING already.

Welcome to the club. The 2.4's are notorious for this problem and noone ever seems to figure it out. I am in the process of rebuilding my engine and I have a feeling that this might finally take care of the problem. It's kind of embarassing when you pull up in front of a group of people and the car starts to surge like it wants to die....I feel your guys' pain.
That condition can not be normal, my Z has never done that in some years allready. But I will think it has to do with the fuel system, if not the fuel pump that canīt hold the pressure may be a faulty fpr or clogged fuel filter. Hope someone has solved the problem and will share the answer.
i have the same problem only once in a while. it will drop to 500rpm and i keep giving it gas while it bogs then the rpms come up and im good. it might not happen the rest of the day or week but then keep doing it over and over.
The coil housing is another suspect... for any failure.
well it seems my car is not alone with this problem at least.....lol It is very embarrasing when it stalls while trying to take off in front of people. My car does it almost everytime i leave somewhere that the car has sat for more than a few minutes and it has been dangerous a few time whiel it stalls and wont rev while i sit helpless in the middle of a intersection or 2-lane hiway. i'm gonna see if theres a higher pressure fuel pump available and go from there.
oh man, i thought i was alone on this too. my 96 2.2 5 speed overheats and stalls at stop lights that are longer then 1-2 minutes. personally i think it's the air filter is clogged and choking the engine but for right now i could care less as i just bought an LD9 and it's half way done being built up. only 1 month or so to go of driving the death trap before the new engine goes in. Oh yes and i also get codes thrown every 20km....don't know why, but when i check it it says theres a problem with my exhaust or gas cap.....yeah, P.O.S.
I had this same problem last year, my car would do the same thing or even stall. I would get codes saying the number 2 or 4 cycl. is missfireing and then it would do it all the time none stop. I would repleace the coil houseing and it would fix my proplem for about 3-4 months then start right back up doing the same thing. Then one day i just decided to repleace all the ignition stuff except the module and it still did the same thing then a month later the module went and i replaced that and it has never came back since then and its been about a year and a half now. Maybe thats the problem maybe not but it fixed my car. Hope thats helps you guys.
Wow, I always wondered what this is. Mine does it from time to time. But lately has been getting worse.
i heard it was vavle floating. basically too much oil pressure when you first start it up.
or maybe a new coolant temp sensor.
