eh.... what? theres quite a few autos on this site that are damn fast.

now, is this a 2.2 OHV... or the 2.2 ecotec??

im assuming that its the OHV since you cant beat the cobalt... 2.2 ohv autos are pretty slow-even WITH mods... but they can be built up to be pretty heathy little engines

solid engine mounts
aluminum crank pulley
finish your exhuast ie:bigger downpipe and a high-flow cat
msd ignition coils and bigger plug wires

with that i bet you beat the cobalt.

and of course if that doesnt do it, aluminum flywheel and aftermarket clutch

NITROUS
TURBO

Not worth the time or money unless you turbo it, with those mods you MIGHT beat one.. With a turbo its a garuntee.

swap in an eco.

I'd go with a 35-50 shot of nitrous. A lot cheaper than everything thats been listed off, plus you will destroy the cobalt.

Swap to eco, if you boost the 2200 you will end up having to rebuild it, might as well just get that motor swap over with if you want to go fast in that car.

Well considering it a 2002 just sell it and buy a 2003 with an eco. There's roughly $1000 difference in private party resale value, so if you can sell your car at a good price (for you that is) and pick up a 2003 at a good deal it should cost you less than a grand. If you're not willing to go that route then either a turbo or head work is in order.

800 dollar eco swap, Enough Said! Don't bother with bolt-ons they are such a waste.

Agreed. You obviously have no clue (the OP), which puts any decent mods way out of your range.

Well - Nitrous - has the problem of limited availability.

Yes the 2.2L ohv can be built up to beat Cobalt LS. But the Cobalt LS has the advantage of power.

Here's some specifics on both cars - stock

Cobalt LS - with 5sp manual tranny
Motor: 2.2L Ecotec, Horsepower: 145-148hp at the crank, Curb Weight (w/o driver): about 2,900 lbs.
Estimated 1/4 mile: 16.2 sec.@ 85 mph

2002 Cavalier (with 2.2L ohv) with 5 sp. manual tranny
Motor: 2.2L ohv I4, Horsepower: 115 hp at the crank, Curb Weight (w/o driver): about 2,730 lbs.
Estimated 1/4 mile: 17.0 sec @ 80 mph

Since you don't want to go with the turbo. You may want to consider swapping the 2.2 for either a 2.4L TC (LD9) motor or a 2.2L Ecotec.
Either will put in the hunt, and both have a lot more performance add ons than 2.2L ohv motor has.

Here's a few brake down of what you car would be like with either motor.

Cavalier with 2.2L Ecotec - and 5 sp manual.
Motor: 2.2L Ecotec, Horsepower: 140hp at the crank, Curb Weight (w/o driver): about 2,715 lbs.
Estimated 1/4 mile: 16.2sec @ 85.5 mph

Cavalier Z24 - with 5 sp manual
Motor: 2.4L TC (LD9), Horsepower: 150-155hp at the crank, Curb Weight (w/o driver): about 2,815 lbs.
Estimated 1/4 mile: 15.9sec @ 86.5 mph

Keep in mind these are stock motors with no mods to them. But needless to say with the engine swap - you would also need to swap out the ECM. and motor mounts.

Hope that helps

where are you racing him at?

Re: how to beat a cobalt coupe LS

Why doesnt anyone ever suggest the 2.4 SS motor as a swap idea?
It is 170+hp with around 165lbs torque.

The old 2.4s are actually slower than the 2.2 Ecotecs.

They have more max output but I have never lost to a Sunfire GT yet in my 2.2 Ecotec Sunfire, even when it was stock. They always want to race me thanks to having a cusom exhaust, carbon fiber hood and Bomber body kit.

They did put a limiter at 110mph on the Ecotec, no clue whether the GT has this.

GM guaged the transmission and programming to use all the Ecotec's power more evenly across the RPM band at speeds you will acutally use.

That extra hp of the 2.4 is wasted in the higher rpms when the race would have to be from 90-110mph.

The SS 2.4 Ecotec engine will make that Cav fly 0-60 in around 7 seconds.

my 01 4door auto w/ 2.4 can hang with a cobalt SS

me: 2001 4 door ls sport
2.4 motor 4speed auto
pacesetter header
magnaflow full exhaust
CAI
secret cams
no-AC

him: 2006 colbalt SS
2.4 eco, automatic
WAI
cat-back

we ran side by side the whole time, no one gained any distance, I wish I had 2 door not a 4 door

Mike Tampa wrote:Why doesnt anyone ever suggest the 2.4 SS motor as a swap idea?

because it won't work (easily)

there's this thing called a reluctor ring thats cast into the crankshaft.. key word here is CAST

jbodies want to see a 7 tooth reluctor.
2.4 ecos have a 58 tooth reluctor.

so unless you put the 2.2 eco crank in the 2.4 it won't work.. which btw, completely defeats the purpose of the swap in the first place.
you could run a stand alone ignition system, but then your car is absolutely OBD2 illegal.
for the trouble its worth, just stroke out the 2.2 with a JBP crankshaft

and to the original poster, rip out the OHV and swap in an eco. don't waste your time modding it, you're only shooting yourself in the foot.

I've been on both sides of the fence. Go eco. you'll thank me later.

with some mild mods you'll wax most regular cars including porkly n/a cobalts

an intake/header/exhaust eco hits times an ohv needs 5psi of boost to get to

"The old 2.4s are actually slower than the 2.2 Ecotecs."

I disagree,I have pulled easily on a stock Cobalt LS and beat 2.2 eco cavs in my 98 2.4 and all I had was a WAI,

Why would someone come up at the light, look over, rev the motor, take off with wheels peeling race and then let me win?
Did they put on the GT body kit, badge and they were in an SE?
That makes no sense.
Did I everytime race a GT with a blown motor or?
There has been several, same result, they lost.
There is times when they yell over, lets go, or lets race or whatever to prompt me at the light so I am not guessing someone was racing, I know they were.

Also, the 0-60 times on the net go anywhere, for both cars, up to a half second difference in time depending on who did the test. 0-60 times on the net are unreliable. I have seen people say the SS 2.4 Cobalt is 0-60 in 7.8, thats bs.

Anyways, I am in Arizona, someone with a GT can race me if they would like.
