Can a 2.4 be bored 40 over?
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 10:16 PM
First off, you may note that my username denotes I don't exactly drive a Jbody, I drive one of those "cute" little miatas. I've always liked j-bodies and thought of them as superior in bang-per-buck in the fwd compact world. However, there is a guy at work who probably isn't doing the j-body crowd justice with stickers galore and a huge fart cannon on his beaten 01 Z24.

He's recently destroyed a rod bearing and is having the engine rebuilt. He says he's having the machine shop bore it 40 thousandths over and that he's ordered the pistons already. He claims his new displacement will be a magical 3.1 liters.

I call BS on him, but it's been a while since I've looked at Jbody parts or to see peoples buildups so I don't want to look like an ass and find out that you really can bore the 2.4 that much and that somebody makes piston's for it.

I've used the search but didn't really get anything so I apologize if anything like this has come up before and that I'm beating a dead horse. Any information you guys can provide to either correct me or call BS on this poser is greatly apreciated.

it is possible... safe not 100% sure but i know that will be the max he can overbore.

As far as 3.1 liters i call BS as even doing a stroker doesnt bring it up that far. Id leave him and his farting cavi alone as you prolly will get into some stupid argument with him that will have you leaving with a lower iq score.

a 5.7 litre 350ci small block chevy , when bored .030 only jumps to a 5.8 litre motor

so he is crack smoking

wow, when did this happen?! thats news to me.

and your friends newly over bored .040 block will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.4.5 -maybe even less.

if you think about it, sure boring a 350chevy .030 over makes it a 5.8L, BUT its got 4 more holes to bore out! dont forget that!

I think that was his point.. Even with a V8 it's still only 0.1 additional displacement.

I'd be interested in who this guy's been talking to regarding being able to get 3.1L of displacement out of a 2.4L in the first place.

Thanks for the quick replies guys and I think I'll take the advice about not getting into some big fight about it and get back to ignoring him.
As for my compliment on J-body's having bang per buck, it's hard to find another car in the current j-body price ranges that have the same hp and tq as Sunfire GT's and Z24's.

A stock 2.4L has a 90mm bore and 94mm stroke. His displacement after a .040" overbore will be 2.44L I was thinking that maybe he calculated it for .400" instead of .040", but even that only gives 2.95L. He or whoever told him what his displacement would be doesn't have a clue.

4 more holes which is 8 holes total , and yet only gains .1 litres

so .040 on only 4 holes is gonna be alot less than .1 litres

for the ecotec i know they have a stock 86mm bore and they make big bore kits that take them out to 90mm and 4mm is .160 in and it only increase the displacement to 2.4L

The one, the only, ME.

It's practical impossible for a Quad4/TC block to reach 3.1L

To reach 3.1L out of a Quad4/TC motor - you need to have Bore of an LS1 (3.9") 99mm, and a stroke of a 400 block - (4.0") 101.6mm.

Which to my knowledge is neither possible or practical out of stock 2.4L TC/Quad 4 block.
