Dynomax ultraflow how loud?
Sunday, April 08, 2007 2:41 PM
I was wondering if anyone here is running a dynomax ultraflow muffler and if so how loud is it? I'm running my megan racing N1 style muffer and it's just way to loud for what I want. If you have it on your car let me know what you think and if you have sound clips even better.

I know the "thrush" is the turbo muffler which is the quieter muffler. I might go with that as well, I'm not 100% sure yet.

not to be ignorent anton, but im about 115% positive that you didnt hit a 181db rating...sorry man, but i find that really really hard to believe especially when your eardrums blow at 180..sorry man try again

I am good on my exhaust now, I have a GMPP touring exhaust from a cobalt ss/sc that I had retrofitted on.

It's all a matter of I/O size with any muffler. I ran a 2-1/2" Ultraflo on my LN2'd S-truck that I salvaged from a van I had it on shortly (That was going to the yard) and the result was noisy. I later switched to a 2" Dynomax Turbo and found it to still have a nice, deep note but not as loud. I figure that if I had used a 2" Ultraflo in the first place, I would have had a lil' louder note than I would have with the Dynomax, but not much. That and the effect on the exhaust signal wouldn't have suffered because of the severe diameter change, causing me to lose mileage.

yea it was an exaggeration to get my car higher on the search if you search by db's the highest is 999 its just a fake fact that has nothing to do with this post. i havnt updated that in a while either. but no one has the ultra flow on a cav?

I have a turbo muffler on my wife's 03 Sunfire.
The entire exhaust together sounds better than 99% of the ones I hear on the net.

I just reminded myself to post videos...

2003 Sunfire with 2 1/4 inch turbo muffler, 2 1/4 piping, 2 1/2 inch resonator, a 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter, 2 1/2 inch down-pipe, a 4:2:1 RK Sports 'clone' header, E-bay strut brace, ground wire kit and an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition.

yes but im not sure if that has enough flow? the ultra flow would have more flow but more noise and i can live with that but if its not that much of a gain or loss (right now i have 4-1 header, 2 1/4 piping to a 2 1/4 high flow thunderbolt cat then 2 1/4 to a ricer can) if i can not lose power with the super turbo muffler i would do that but i tink i will.??

The matter of flow in relation to HP when building a street-legal system, according to David Vizard (Thee exhaust-building guru), should be as follows:

The choice of exhaust pipe size (But not muffler I/O size) should be so that it flows 2.2cfm@10.5in.hg. for every 1hp the engine produces. The same rule applies to choosing a muffler, only the I/O size becomes regardless. If the flow-rate desired with the choice of muffler is too low with a model with which it's I/O is the same as the exhaust pipe, then a model with a larger I/O that does meet the flow requirements can be used with the smaller pipe by may of pipe adapters/reducers, such as those found at truck parts stores.

To key point is that the pipe size used to meet the flow requirement remain the same all the way to the end of the system. If this means using a reducer at the outlet of the muffler, if the muffler is located at the very end of the vehicle & system, then it's highly suggested. This is done in order to prevent the megaphone effect that many cheezy, cheapo "ricer-tuner" mufflers create because of their small-in, big-out design. After that, you can just add a tip to clean-up the looks of it. Maybe even a resonator-style tip to fine-tune the note, if you like. As for muffler design choice itself, that's up to you. But open-chamber style mufflers, such as Flowmaster's Delta series, usually have the best results in making power since the exhaust sees them as the open end of the system. Which like total system length itself effects tuning.

If anyone is confused by this, don't worry... There's an article on it in an old (But not that old!) issue of of Popular Hot Rodding that Mr. Vizard wrote himself that you can read that I've just quoted from.

Anton, if you want to tone down how load the exhaust is, the simplest thing to do is to put a glasspack muffler right after the cat. Get the longest one you can fit between the cat and the first bend at the rear, before the axle. Summit Racing Dynomax Thrush Magnum Glasspacks and Cherry Bomb Glasspacks, both of which have perforated cores, not the louvered cores which restrict the exhaust gas flow, by creating turbulence in the gas stream.

Being as you live in Minnesota, I would recommend the Dynomax Stainless Steel Glasspack, to prolong the life in the snow belt.

A while back I took my 2001 Chevy Prizm LSi and put on a 2.5" exhaust with a straight through muffler and it made my ears bleed.

I had one resonator added and it helped very marginally.

I told the guy to put it back on the rack and install a second resonator, and believe it or not, it fit and it too helped but I could only stand the sound for a few months. I was actually going tone deaf!

I took it back and had a turbo muffler put on and had the straight through hacked off.

I did notice a slight drop in output, but it was almost un-noticeable.

For the 1 hp or so difference, I prefer to keep my hearing.

That is why on the Sunfire I stuck with the turbo muffler.

I have no rasp at all with the exhaust on my wife's car, in fact it sounds perfect.

I just bought a 2.5" dynomax ultraflow ss muffler, 2.5" cat and a long perf. core resonator (16"), kinda worried about using this muffler since my research seems to say it's going to be LOUD, anyone have any thoughts? My 4-2-1 header had a 2.5" downpipe so I decided to just go 2.5" exhaust, compression bent which won't be a true 2.5, somewhere between 2.25 and 2.5

I know plenty of people that basically run a straight pipe out of their car and it doesn't even come close to making your ears bleed. Your on crack. You could take any little chevy open header and the cars at the track would still drown it out.
