2.4 engine rebuild
Monday, March 05, 2007 7:05 PM
i have an 01 z24 and am about to upgrade my 2.4 engine. i've looked online in a bunch of places for short/long blocks and engine kits. the problem is that i either don't find it at all or i find something thats for an older year. i did happen to come across a site that showed a 2.4L vin T upgrade kit but said it was for up to 99. can i use that kit or will i have to keep searching? does anyone have any good sites to buy performance parts from? sorry for the noobish question but hey, gotta start somewhere. thanks

www.importperformanceparts.net/ has a rebuild kit. but you would need new rods since the kit dont come with them

thanks for the link....but, the only kit i see for the 2.4 is for 96-00, or is it basically the same motor for those years and 01?

wut exactly do those engine kits do? i have never seen or heard of an engine kit

only difference between 99 and newer 2.4's is 99 had EGR and i think the 00 and up had slighty higher compression.

other than that they are basically the same

As far as internals, pistons were the only difference between the 96-98 and 99-02...so you will be fine

Just choose which compression ratio and overbore size you want for the piston...But from their website, it looks like they only have standard and "underbore" sizes for ld9 (2.4L vin T) pistons...that's really strange.

thanks guys. i'll check a few other things then i'll prolly end up building a new engine with all forged internals and other high performance stuff then swap motors.

does the .2:1 comp ratio make a difference when im getting the parts? sorry for the stupid question..im learning as i go. i just want to make sure i can buy the 9.5: 1 comp ratio kit and still be good. thanks

so thats all u need to rebuild ur engine?

Cam bearings don't exist on the ld9 and the timing set and lifters aren't an absolute must...The one item the kit doesn't include is Eagle Rods...There are also other small things like the I/E manifold gaskets, cam carrier gaskets, and timing gaskets; new seals; etc

...but yeah...that is pretty much all

99 had no egr, 98-96 had egr.
99-02 had high compression and high impedance injectors.
99.5-02 had smaller starter, than 96-98 did.
99-02 had a different knock sensor than 96-98.
Thats most of it.

Maybe some really early 99s, but EVERY 99 I have ever seen had no EGR including mine. Also Lenko and someone talked about his before, and I believe no one has seen a 99 with a EGR, just heard of a 99 with an EGR.
Lenko where you at.

^^^^The claim was that there isn't a single 99' J-body that came with the LD9+EGR

I personally do not think a 99 j-body ever came with EGR, but there might have been one.

I've never seen a 99 J-car with a 2.4L and EGR... I found a very early 99 in the wrecking yard (the last digits in the VIN were below 1000), and it had no EGR... so I'm still under the assumption that this "early 99 might have it" myth is just that... a myth. No one can find one... so...
