Getting Head redone. Some questions...
Monday, February 26, 2007 11:10 AM
Here's the scoop. I have a '96 LD9 head that has 167,000 miles on it. I have already purchased the LZM stage 2 cams, 1mm oversized valves, guides and lifters. What else should I replace? I am thinking I need new springs, but do I need new retainers. Will stock springs be ok or should I get stiffer springs? While it is apart, I want to do it right. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

LZM says there stage 2 cams works with stock springs, lifters, etc etc. so just get brand new parts

no need for stronger springs unless your planning on raising your rev limmiter a good bit.

Now I need to know where to get the springs and retainers new. JBP is asking quite a lot imo. Thanks for the quick replies.

HO valve springs and retainers could be an option.
That's what I will be running here in a few months when I get my built engine running.

If you decide to go that route you will need.....

Ho valve springs, ho valve retainers, stock 2.4l keepers.

Can't remember the exact spring tension difference right off hand.
But i think stock there in the 65-70 range and Ho's are in the 85-90.

Are "keepers" the same as retainers? Also. with 167,000 miles, will I need new valve locks? I am sure I need new seals and will also be replacing those. I am getting pretty close to $1200 in new parts! Is that normal? Where can I get H.O. springs and retainers at a reasonable price? Are the seals the same for the H.O. springs vs the stock springs? Thanks in advance.

So, I am not an idiot, but I seem to not be able to find a place online for valve springs. Is this a dealer only part? Where did everyone else get their springs from? A junkyard?

Update:
Here is the part # from GM for the springs(2.4l) - 24574092. Hope this helps anyone looking for new springs.
