About how much horse can you get out of one. Is it worth actually fixing up? You know of course after turbo and all that. My dream is 300 horse. Is it possible with this small motor?
300 is just as easy as with the other motors. Pistons, rods, bearings, 90-93 oil pump, head gasket, and head studs should give you a motor reliable to whatever you can actually put to the ground. The only difficulty you will have is your injectors...there aren't any availible for your motor lol. Search for "top-feed conversion" for more info there.

which 2.2? the 2.2 ecotec or the 2.2 ohv?
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Given the 96 in his profile, I'm gonna guess it's a 2.2L pushrod... you're starting with 120 hp, wanting to more than double the power to 300hp...
(I love it when people pick an arbitrary number to aim for... as in hp numbers... my first suggestion is aim for something more reasonable
)
The number of people on JBO with even close to 300 hp can be counted on one hand. But you don't need lots of hp to get the car going crazy fast in the quarter mile, if that's what you're shooting for.
If you really want 300 hp... be prepared to pony up LOADS of cash. Thousands of dollars in parts, labor, time, fixing stuff when it breaks, etc. 300 hp out of that motor won't be reliable, at all.
If cost is a factor... swap in something with more power to start. It's easier to get more power with more displacement.. I'm stuffing a 3.8L V6 Supercharged engine from a GTP into my Cavalier... it's a lot easier to get 300 hp out of that... so far I'm at $2000 for the parts, doing my own labor. You'll never get a 2.2L motor over 300hp for less than that.
It's not THAT hard to get power out of the OHV 2.2. Most of it's problems with power come from the 8v head not breathing nicely at higher rpm. I have seen a couple people run low boost turbos(4-5psi max) to help with the bad head flow charactaristics up top and it works great not to mention it levels out that torque curve badass. The 2.2 ecotec comes stock with what 140HP? a switch to a 16v head can easily be where that extra hp comes from. Not to mention the fact that the intake manifold on the ohv is grossly inefficient as far as low turbulence air flow goes.
If anything as far as an increase in performance goes you'll get a better percentage increase than the other engine. But I do agree that starting off with a higher output engine would be alot easier. And while the cavvy owners don't do alot with the 2.2ohv from what i can tell you are in luck as alot of s10 owners do hop up the engines and would be able to tell you where to buy stuff. the s10 owners are the ones i see using low boost turbos.

this part stuck out in my mind, but everything else I agree with completely.
a 300hp engine can be made to be as reliable as a 40hp engine, its all in preparation and the tune of the engine.
injectors are your biggest set back.

Ok... I should have clarified.... any stock J-body engine won't sit at 300 hp reliably. Well, maybe an Ecotec since GM has some actual parts for it. And now that HP Tuners is available for us, suer... some cars might be capable of it now. But as it sits right now... there's still only a handful of J-cars that are even CLOSE to 300hp using a J-car motor.... and even fewer are reliable.
ok a little off topic here...there are HP tuners for the 2.2 OHV or the 2.2 ecotech??
I'm one of that hand full with 300HO...WHP even
Of course I have the GOOD 2.2L
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

yay!
ps. no sarcasm on the title either, lenko is the man
ok help me on this.... what do you mean by a switch to a 16v head where does that come from....sorry guys im really new to the whole motor build. i was into flash instead of gas until now. so im willing to learn. thanks
no such swap exists. he was just using a hypothetical, stating that the eco and the 2.2 pushrod have the same displacement, but twice as many valves, being why the eco has a higher hp rating

It might have something to do with the compression and cam profile as well
