Well, what do you have a CAI or a WAI? CAI= Cold Air Intake, WAI= Warm Air Intake, if it is a short ram intake it is a WAI not a CAI. And yes the colder the air the better it is, you want cold air. Your car's computer will just increase the amount of fuel going into the mixture to make everything ideal, and don't beleive what intake companies say with our cars it does not make a diffirence if you have a WAI or a CAI. WAI are probably better because there is less bends in the way for the air to get to your TB.

I live near platteville...southwest corner of the state... so it is considered a short ram intake if it doesn't go into the fender well?

and that really doesn't answer my question though.... does n e one know if the AEM intake is better (for gas miliage or performance) during the winter or should i put the stock intake on???

i wore my AEM Short Ram last winter with no problems, if anything my gas mileage stayed about the same (dropped to about 19mpg during the winter), but was told that was pretty normal being the resistance from snow etc on the roads. Took a road trip with it back in December and averaged about 30mpg or so, and when i went back on the same trip about a month and a half ago, averaged about 32 with my other mods, including cams, and a faulty thermostat that was stuck open (can only imagine the gas mileage if it was functional). If anything, this time of the year the car likes it cause overall the air is cooler, and since the factory box isnt there, also less restriction too.

Leave the cold air intake on it filters the air better and itll give you about 5 extra horses

an intakes an intake. leave whichever one is on the car on the car and sell the other one. But if you must ask I am in favor of short rams. Easier to work with and you dont have to worry about the filter coming off and sucking up water or what not from under the bottom of the car.
