Best bet is to run an advanced search in the third gen forum for xxx swap (where xxx is the engine you are looking for). There will be more info on the 2200's and 2.4's in the archive.
Reason I say advanced search is you can exclude the replies (makes the # of posts the search pulls alot less...)

The Eco platform is a newer breed, and seems to more popular.
No disrespect to the 2.4 guys... but the eco seems to have more backing.
Both the 2.4 and the Eco have their ups and downs as with any engine out there. What I understand is the eco can handle boost a bit better than the LD9, and the Eco weight less than the LD9, another huge bonus to the Eco is that it is still being used by GM and replacement parts are plentiful and less costly than the LD9. With the LD9 you can swap over the important parts from the 2.3HO and it is beleived you can get about 210-215whp out of the LD9 NA with the 2.3HO parts. And with the right engine setup from my understanding you can get more power out of the LD9. But there is no actual proof only theory on this subject. Me personally I love the LD9 it is a good engine and is fun to play around with. But my personal opinon is that the Ecotec is the better engine. Because if the LD9 was a better engine GM would still use it and there would be no Ecotec. It is all debatable and everybody had their diffirent opinions this is just my opinions on the subject.

my opinion..as a GM tech...is that GM went to the ecotec because it was more reliable and lasted longer with less problems therefore giving a better reputation for cars equiped with those engines....NOT because they were better performance engines

Actually they needed something of the sort anyways. There are pleanty of horror stories for the Quad4 family of engines. Though, the ECO hasnt been out that long either.
But look at the facts. GM is hurting. I doubt they care a whole bunch about 'reputation' of the engine. If they're not paying out money for warranty work, they're saving dollars. And dollars is what they're talking about now.
Just like the 'high-value v6' Far from a race engine, but supposed to last a long time.
