Gained more power goin back to stock TB
Tuesday, October 24, 2006 6:30 PM
I had recently put a catback on my car and had already had a 56mm TB on my car, well I put the stock TB back on and it feels like it's got alot more grunt compared to what it did before could this be possible?

You recovered the low end torque you lost by going to the bigger TB. While the 56mm TB gave you more top end HP, you lost the low end torque. The smaller TB creates more air flow velocity, which is good for low end torque, while the bigger TB give you more volume of air for top end HP.

Try the bigger TB after you get the header, high flow cat and ported head on. That should be enough to support the added air flow. You will definitely need the high stall TC then.

yea not sure what the future of the car is yet. The motor is gonna have to be pulled it's got a rear crank seal leaking on it. I really dont feel like pullin the motor to do so, so I might get rid of it.

BOOSTED, You should only need a TC that stalls a couple hundred rpms higher than stock, if you are using a stock cam package. A S/C brings the boost on earlier than a turbo, so the need for a high stall TC isn't as great as with a turbo set-up. The only way that would change, in your case, would be if you changed your cams, then you would need to match your TC to your cams.

All the auto J's could use a TC with atleast a couple hundred more rpms, if your looking for performance.

Agreed,

Gained more going bigger...
Gained more going smaller...
Lost low end torque....
etc, etc, etc...

And yet, no dyno sheets to back anything up.

Just put on a bigger-bore TB and the incresed power IS noticeable from 1000-6500 rpms.
But i am S/Ced so that has something to with it.

Bookmarking this page just because when I get back from Afghanistan I plan on dyno's with stock and 68mm TB's just to see what is better with everything that I will be adding when I return...

of course this will be in about 5 months when this deployment is over

one guy dynoed a 62mm TB on a stock engine for the ecotec and got 10 hp out of it but as mentioned its all up top and with little mods you cant get into the power band fast enough to benefit from it.

yea I thought it was doing good by this swap since everyone else that was doing do with the 2.3 TB swaps were liking them. Just watch my vid on streetfire, also posted on the photo's and media section. my car took almost 11 sec to do 0-60.

Not really... I Changed them out at the track and like someone else said I ran about 2-3 tenths slower. Beyond 6000rpms I could REALLY tell a difference, but it didn't make up for the lost power. If you were shifting at like 7 or 8grand then I could see it being a great benefit though.

Right now I have on a stock TB with those two little screws holding the plate in position ground down. I think if your N/A with the stock rev limiter... then IMHO this is the best on both worlds. or as close as you can get.
