Exhaust Volume

I know this is a little off topic but I didn;t know were else to put it. On friday I was pulled over by a cop. Apparently the pig thought my performance exhaust was too loud. Any way I know have a $168 fine and i;m required to fix it. The thing that makes me mad is that plenty of friends have cars twice as loud as mine and don't get tickets. Anyone out there have a similar experience? I am trying to find a way to get out of it so any suggestions would help.

Its all based on the cop. They do the same thing here. Just drive around with the silencer or stay in the lower rpms when you see any around lol. What setup are you running anyway?

Just because others haven't got caught (yet), doesn't make their exhaust systems legal

When I was 16, I used to like my straightpipes... but as I matured I found the noise was just too much for me... and the people I was annoying around me... so I went with something a little quieter.

Sorry, I know it's not the answer you're looking for... but there is a reason noise bylaws exist

get yourself a resonator after the cat. i've had my catback on almost since i owned this car and even when i get on it cops dont even look at me... but on my 89, boy did i get pulled over... like three times one night... all i had was the stock pipe, a cat that gutted itself (literally, i heard a pop one day, get out, look around and there's a bunch of honeycomb material on the ground behind the car) and a 2.5x16 inch cherry bomb with a massive 4 inch tip. looked like hell, sounded like ass but i didnt care.

Check the local laws where you live, because I had this happen to me once with my 73 Z28 which had a bilt motor with 3" exhaust and turndowns which caused the sound waves to reverberate from the ground to the bottom of the car. Anyway a County cop gave me a ticket so I went to the State Police and asked what the State law was for sound decibles and from how many feet away and the State Trooper looked at me and replyed t" there is no State law or requirement for sound, as long as you have head pipes, mufflers and tailpipes there's nothing the County or State can do to you".
So I took off the turn downs and installed tailpipes which did quiet the car down some more and never had any problems after that.

2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.

Right now i'm running a pacesetter 4-1 header. I cheaped out and used the stock cat and resonator. I have 2 1/4 in pipes all the way to a wicked flow canister. It really doesn't seem that loud until you get on the throttle. Maybe the cop heard me from a few blocks over. Anyway you guys are right, what size resonator should i get.
