I'm listening. The 2.4 in my car started knocking so I'm going to rebuild it. Besides the obvious bottom end, what should I look into?

I was definately thinking 2.3 oil pump but I really don't know what all is out there to do.

there is pistons, rods, crank, new valves or 1mm oversized, port & polish, new cams, valve springs, gaskets, new head. all kinds of stuff. the info is out there

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

In this order...

-2.3L oil pump swap
-slight overbore
-turn the crank (if needed)
-line hone the mains
-professionally clean block

-clevite 77 main and rod bearings (need oversized if crank was turned)
-low compression forged pistons (9:1 or lower)
-Eagle rods
-arp main studs (probably not necessary, but couldn't hurt)

This should be about all for the bottom end

Start with a new water pump and timing set. Even if they look good, do it while the engine is out.

2.3 oil pump.
Stock Crank
Eagle Connecting Rods
Wiseco Pistons
2.3l 086 Head
Secret or HO Cams (HPTuners needed for HO Cams)
HO throttle body
HO intake
Felpro Gaskets

That's just the basics... I'm not sure what's needed for valves, rockers, springs....

X2 that is what I have and it is totally worth it

Yes, I have all that mentioned above in my motor except the 2.3 oil conversion.

If you wanted to go with the 086 head and have a lower compression to tune for boost easier, it would help to have a 7.8:1 or lower CR piston (translates to a final CR of 9:1).

What size of a turbo did you have on the 2200?

I'm in the middle of the same buildup right now hopefully I should be getting my 2.4 core motor next weekend.
I have a new GM crank & 2.3 oil pump & gear; 4340 forged Eagle rods & Wiesco 8.5 cr pistons ( 10.2:1 with the 086 head), 086 HO head, intake, valvesprings and W41 cams; SI stainless valves; ARP head & main studs.

Well i have a garrett T304E! Its a rather large turbo, A bit to big for the 2200 if you ask me. Thats why i wanna completeyly build this 2.4. that way i can up the boost and not worry!

^^^^ Ok, good. Just making sure, because believe it or not, there are people out there that don't understand that there is such a thing as too small of a turbo. A .63 trim should be a good match to a 2.4. That is what I plan to use in the future, so that I can make decent, streetable power with little boost lag. Good luck with the build.

THank you and im hopping for it to go well myself. My biggest fear is gettin it back together and the thing not firein up or using crappy parts. What cam/cam gears, valves, ect. would you suggest using?

Damn very nice Speedracer! i noticed you have alot of the 2.3 HO parts in the 2.4 head. Were they direct fit or did you have to mod them? Again very nice and thx for the help!

The H.O. exhaust cams and towers are direct fit on a 2.4L head, but stiffer springs are an absolute must when running that high of lift.

Hey Brian, are you still running the LO intake or have you stepped it up to the HO intake cam? Just curious.

still running the pre-95 LO cam........... works out great so far.

The HO intake tower fits aswell doesn't it? You just loose the cam position sensor right?

yes...which is why I didn't bother mentioning it

Well when you go full standalone like Megasquirt you dont need the sensor anyway, booo HPT, Horay MS jk

It is a good idea to rebuild the motor with the strongest parts no matter what kind of horsepower you are looking for. Any kind of forced induction, however, is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to be rebuilt with forged internals and by using the parts/ steps stated above (although the 086 head isn't necessary, but helps get more air into the cylinders).

So with HP Tuners you can eliminate the need for the cam position sensor, does that have any negative effects on any other pcm functions?
