05 pwns 03
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 8:05 PM
I bought a 03 eco and I've been driving it for about a year until my block cracked 2 months ago and I got an engine swap. I got a 05 put in though, so it was a little different. Noticeable difference though, 05 pulls a lot of harder and quicker. Runs a little more rich, but it's alright. I looked them up, horsepower, torque, and displacement are all the same so I didn't know why it felt quicker, but then I read the 05 has a compression ratio of 10:1 and the 03 has 9.5:1. Never knew that, people always told me different things so I never believed anyone. Higer comp, but same stats in the end, hows that? And is it faser because of that, or any other reasons? I know it's faster becuase I drove that 03 for year, and this 05 is deffinetly quicker and faster.

Yes, somebody please clarify this. I thought all the 2.2's had a 10:1 Compression. Wikipedia says either 9.5 or 10.

To my knowledge, the 03--05 L61 J-body Ecotecs are all 10.0:1 compression ratio engines. The 2.0 L Cobalt is 9.5:1, I think. I've never read that the 03 was anything but 10.0:1. Maybe someone can elighten me. I am certain that the 04-05 models were 10.0:1 (well, according to my GM books, anyway).

there were big varianced in the way these card felt... i have drivin a 02 03 and 04 on a constant basis..

my 03 gets the nod and pwn3s the other two accourding to my "butt dyno"

the heads were a little different on later models but that shouldnt have anything to do with it

You read wrong, and if you cracked the block its obvious that something was wrong internally so its no surprise the new one runs better, the butt dyno really dont mean anything

This is Fact. Lees04Cav is right on point.

Sorry to say but no increase in power between the two car you had/have. (I mean unless prior mods were done without your knowledge) Maybe cause the older car you had was on its way out and the new one is fresh. I dunno?! Maybe this new car likes you and the other just didnt and blew up. j/k

All in all you got a running car so be happy. Life goes on.

Not all engines are created equal. Not every 2.2 eco is going to put out the exact same number of hp, or any other engine for that matter.

I don't know exactly how I did it, but after a race the car started to act really bad and they found a crack in the block. Wasn't that big, but it was there. I don't know if it was from previous installations and it just got bigger or what (becuase I have messed with it a lot), and they showed me and I was pretty mad how such a small crack is so expensive. Oh well, I am happy that I have my car running, and I don't know why but I still think the 05 is better. I bought my 03 with 25xxx on it and rode it til 34xxx, this engine has 29xxx so mileage isn't the factor. It looks sort of different too, at least the fuel system does. On the sidenote I beat a Mazda 6, 6speed today. Close race in 1st and 2nd, but I had him pretty bad at 3rd and after.

without boost, and only 34K on it, id say that would be prettyyyyy hard to do

We've had quite a few 2.0L ecotecs with disapearing coolant. The cylinder liners crack.
**edit** I guess.

there were block revisions in 05, unsure of what it is/was but the block was "strengthened"

I seriously doubt a low mileage engine of ANYTHING would crack the block unless severely overheated or temperature shocked, and even then the ecotec's have a much more stringent quality control test to pass before being ok'd.

A freak thing methinks. All ecotecs in Js are going to be relatively equal. the only difference in performance would be due to the weight of the car.

i think you had a bum engine from the get-go

The Ecotec on the Saturn LS-series was the one with 9.5:1CR.

Thanks for the info and heads-up. I say heads-up because I wasn't aware that these extremely informative posts even existed. I would agree with your original request to make the TSB post a separate sticky. Just my 2 cents.

hey smartass, its a mostly stock engine with low miles. so yeah id say its pretty hard to put a crack in it.

so id sure like to know why it broke. there should have been no reason too.
