Planning a 2.4 Eco Swap
Tuesday, September 12, 2006 1:51 PM
I have an 04 Cav, slightly modded, check profile. What issues do you guys know of that I will run into with tuning? I know the 2.4 is 10.5:1 compression, is the head different or is it just bore and stroke? I already know that the ignition is different between the 2.2 and the 2.4, is this going to cause me any headaches? I tried searching, but these questions weren't answered.

As he said it is all different, as for tuing it well HPT supports it and if you know how to tune that should not be a problem. Hahn has shown the stock 2.4 Ecotec can hold some boost, but first you have to get the motor in the car with a tranny. Once you do that you will be set.

Already have a 2.2 eco it's the standard engine in 04. GM used a different 5 speed for the new Cobalt SS with the 2.4 eco? BTW on the outside the 2.2 eco and the 2.4 eco don't look different with the exception of the ignition, but that's just different ecu tuning, the firing order is the same. The 2.4 has 4 seperate coils and the 2.2 only has 2. I thought GM used the same block and only changed interenals. That's what they did with the 2.0 S/C.

I don't mind being the first, I'm just looking for any differences I might have overlooked, but like I said from the outside it looks just like a 2.2. Aside from 4 coils instead of 2.

The block is the same, I think the head would even fit on the 2.2 from what I remember, the difference is the computer and vvt.

You might want to check the mount locations to make sure they are the same, the 2.4 was never in a j-body and I am not sure if they changed that.

Also since the transmission are different from the j to the cobalt(I am pretty sure) you might have to see if you can swap parts from your 2.2 to the 2.4.

The cobalts are drive by wire and if that is controled by the ecm then you might have to try to make your car drive by wire, if it's controled seperately you can probably swap parts from your 2.2.

Something interesting to think about, you might look into swapping the crank, rods and pistons from the 2.4 into the 2.2 after you get the block bored out, then look at the cams from the 2.4 and see if they are swappable? That way you could keep your ecm and know the block fits right.

If you were thinking of swapping the engines without changing the computer I don't think that would work, mostly because of the vvt.
