Whats the difference from a 97 2.2 and a 99 2200?

Not much really. The cylinder head, intake, fuel rail/injectors, camshaft, and rocker arms are different. I think the exhaust manifold is little different also. Probably some other small revisions, like coil location, but its still the same ole LN2 OHV engine. Both put out relatively the same power.

Oh yeah, the 2.2 is notorious for blown headgaskets, which may be the reason for the rivisions in the 2200. I believe it has a better track record and iirc coolant flow direction is opposite of the 2.2.
