2000 Z24 HO cams will it work?
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 1:10 PM
hello all I have a 2000 Z24 with a set of HO cams 212/212 @ .050 .410/.410 and have found someone who can cut the hex in for the ps drive and put an MSD cam position sensor on so I know it will physically work but will there be any drivability issues?
I also have another LD9 head which is being ported & polished with stainless oversize valves and HO springs and I want to run these cams since I have them and it's cheaper to get the hex cut and the MSD cam position sensor.

who says it won't work?? I know a few people who have these cams in their 2.4. Sure you have to do some machining to the intake cam and cam housings get them to work properly, but if he does his research it can and will be possible.

It will work on the stock ecm.

If you have an auto, you'll have a rough idle.

Also, the peak power of Ho cams is 6200rpm so it's within the 2.4 limit.

I've always heard that the HO cams wouldnt work because of too much lift, etc, and the stock PCM doesnt like it (unless im thinking about the W41 cams).. I've got a set of .375@200 cams, and they idle pretty rough already, can only imagine what a higher lift cam would do.

your timing is off if those cams idle rough.

The hex drive isn't the only problem, the intake cam will need a magnetic pickup installed so ECU gets a cam position signal.

Does anyone know what the pn is for the MSD cam position sensor and will this work with the stock wiring?
Thanks for the replys everyone, but I am going to use these cams since Gilles says it will work and I trust his word plus it's still cheaper to run these than to pay $400 for new ones.

They also wont work with 2.4 cam towers. You will need to get 2.3 cam towers and lifters. If I was you, I would use the LO intake cam from a 95 and the HO exhaust cam.

the HO cams can work with the 2.4 cam towers. If he wants to use the 2.4 cam towers all he has to do is some machining to the lifter barrels to make clearance for lobes.

No,
I think he just means the idle is rougher than stock.
I'm running the same cams and the idle isn't as smooth/quiet as stock.
Obviously.

Yup yup.

I'm trying that. But all the HO exhaust cams I'm finding have crapped out lobes.
BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I know this, but you have to machine them out to 35mm, the same size as the 2.3 tower, and use 2.3 lifters...soo..jsut go with the 2.3 lifters, will be cheaper.

Mylife75 the folks who can modify the cams are at miller-performance.com, and for everyones info I have a complete 086 HO head with the cams & towers so if I have to use anything I already have it. I would just put the 086 head with the cams on my engine except for the 12:1 cr and the fact that no on makes a header for the HO head in a J-body which means a custom job. And if I'm going to pay for a custom job it'll be for a turbo header/manifold, which I intend to do but it's going to take another year before I have all the parts and money I need to build my 2.4/086 HO head/intake turbo motor. In the mean time I'm going to port my extra 2.4 head and install the HO cams, towers and intake with HPtuner software and maybe turbo it.

if you go with the HO towers, you will have to use power steering with the pulley style. and have a bracket machined to hold it in place. thats what i did!
but then, you wont have any place for the cam position sensor to go in.... so you will have to get the intake housing machined so you can put the holes for the sensor and then get the notch weld on your intake cam.

u runnin 12:1 on a turbo motor??? guessin its not for pump gas lol

the 12:1 comes from using the the HO quad head with the TC bottom end...which if he used that head hed need lower comp. pistons..im sure hes aware

question on topic of the ho cams and towers.. could you use the 2.3 bottom of the cam tower to clear the lobes and lifter bore and use the 2.4 top tower cover to still have a spot for the cam position sensor or do these 2 not match up, ive never held up or compaired the two but was just a thought

miller performance will modify the intake cam to work....... but what you need from my understand from someone i know that has done it. You use the 2.3 exhaust cam tower and have the intake cam tower machined out for the bigger lifters and cam journals.

the 2.3 cam towers use different gaskets set up than the 2.4. your best bet is to use both halves.

cam journals do not need to be machined, just the lifters

Not the 95 2.3!

Delslo9 - No I'm not running 12:1 cr and boost, I said I would just put the 086 HO head and cams on my existing engine except that would give me a cr of 12:1 which is too high for pump fuel.

I have decided to just get another block or complete engine and build my turbo motor with the 086 HO head, cams and intake since I already have forged Wiesco pistons ( 9.7 static cr with the 086 head), Eagle 4340 forged H beam rods and a new stock crank. I'll just get the ARP head & main studs, MLS head gasket, 60-1 turbo, IC and custom turbo header, HP Tuners software and bigger injectors.
