Just wondering if any of you guys out there are using the stubby cold air intakes i see all over the internet. Been looking at them on ebay and wondering what they are like. Any input?

yes, i believe people have them. anything is better than the stock box. just get a decent filter and you'll be good to go
warm air intakes also known as short ram intakes are just as good if not better in some cases and regions then a Cold air intake ( the long ones).

usually CAI's are better than short rams. They take in cooler air from outside the engine bay, and are better for low to mid range power.
Here's my idea for a true CAI. Get a short ram where it locates the filter where the stock box used to be (basically 99% of the short rams out there). Enclose that filter in a box that keeps out the heat of the engine bay. From that box, attach a pipe the same diameter as the intake pipe that runs down into the fender and, if there's room, pointed towards the front of the car through a vent in the bumper to create sort of a "ram air" effect. So basically you have a true CAI that keeps the filter out of the direct path of water and debris.

One question i have with regards to the short air intakes or warm air intakes is with regards to the stock air box. Do you remove it all or just the top.
The cold air intakes are nice but i live in when we get a lot of snow and salt on the roads in winter so the more distance between the filter and the road the better for me. But hey everyone has somethign they prefer.

You mean like this? This is my intake which I bought off e-bay.
I had to make an extension as it stopped right above the transmission, though. If I put the filter on the pipe as it was, the hood wouldn't close. It works just as well as any other intake I've had but just understand that teh intakes you find on e-bay are typically just genericpre-bent pipes that don't necessarly fit perfectly.

nope.... most long rams usually have a longer distance and more bends for air to travel through....
more bends heats air...
and low and mid range power come from higher velocity which is a trait of short ram intakes.... less distance to travel. remember, quickest point from a-b.
also with j-s, they are no aerodynamic kings, air circulates under the hood.

good idea, but a few more points.....
ram air only really occurs at higher speeds, and it will not really pass througha filter which would slow any ram effect. look at the intakes on f1, indy cars where its a direct hit from opening to TB.
the term TRUE CAI is def a marketing gimmick, always has been. the only difference between an alleged TRUE CAI and a short ram converted to one is that the extra piping came in the package to begin with.
air temp isnt the only thing that determines power, contrary to what the big companies and magazines want you to think.
air velocity, resonance, and viscosity and volume are all legitament factors, with velocity being highly important. think of how turbos vs superchargers debate on turbo lag and instant low end power of a supercharger... its the velocity of the air arriving in the chamber. which is why aem no markets the V2 and weapon R now markets the street weapon... both supposedly increase velocity/resonance, however tend to be a bit gimmick like since the baffles installed in em restrict VOLUME which is just as important as velocity is on the low end, volume helps determine top end.
while cooler air is more denser, this is true, on a hot day or summer night the ground still gives off heat from the day. so placing it outside the engine bay and near a hot ground is like jumping out the frying pan and into the fire more or less.
so to the original poster, honestly, pick whatever you want to list in your mods list. some people instantly get impressed when they hear COLD AIR intake, but unless you strap a fridge or a freezer system to the filter, theres no damn way anyone is getting COLD air. its all apart of the marketing gimmicks sold with intakes....
the opposite of warm is cool
the opposite of hot is cold
so why do they say WARM air intake and then state COLD air....they dont match, 90% or more of the "tuner crowd, dont put much thought to their marketing gimmicks, and it helps their sales, when in reality people who pay 100$ more for an extra piece of pipe get the same performance as the SAME companies short ram intakes... no intake has really been dominant over another.
I honestly got mine so i wouldn't have to hear the Vrrooom from the short ram anymore. It was giving me reasons to drain my gas tank quickly due to the sounds it gives off, and the fact i didn't have to look at an air filter in my engine bay anymore was enough of a reason for me.
