Ii have a 2000 cavy w/a 2200, 2.2l non-ecotec and a 4spd auto... i was wondering if it was possibly to simply switch the motor with a 97 z24 motor... and if possible, what would i nedd to get/change in order for it to work??

with that year why not just go eco?? it would be easier
Since the 97 motor is the same as the 96-98 variety... with EGR and other bs.... but functionally similar to the 99-02 variety.... you could use the block, head, etc... remove the egr crap and ditch it... get some 99-02 injectors (I've got some stock ones laying around if you can't find any)... a 99-02 exhaust manifold and downpipe/cat...
Then you'd need the engine bay wiring for a 00-02 2.4L with automatic. And you can use your stock PCM, but get it reflashed to a 2.4L program.... or get a 00-02 automatic 2.4L PCM.
Not terribly hard... just have to hunt down the right parts to make it work 100%
oic thanx... i know the z24 is a dead motor but which engine would give me more bang for my buck and which would be easier to find new/used parts for??

Stock, the 2.4L has more power. But the Ecotec is newer, therefore more refined. The 2.4's have oiling issues if you don't check it, it will run dry and throw a rod at hard acceleration... not guaranteed, but more likely. Ecotec newer, seals probably hold oil better
If it came down to cost, and you've got a line on the 2.4L already, go with that... but if you had the choice and no other influences... I'd go Ecotec.
Lots of parts for both... but the bottom line is cost.
I forgot to mention... you'll need the trans out of the 2.4L car as well... the 2.2L one won't bolt up.
ok... that settles it... ill go eco... but will my 4spd auto tranny bolt onto the 2.2l eco? or will i have to find another? and will my stock electronics and everything else work with the motor besides the headers n stuff...

def go Eco!!! around me they are everywhere and cheap!! for 1/2 the price you get a motor with 1/10th the miles.. go Eco if not for only the price. Ohh yeah and the motor is good too
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..

I'm pretty certain the 2.2L and 2.4L and Ecotec are all different bellhousings.... so you'd need the trans for whatever motor you're using.
If you stick with an auto, you use the same mounts as your existing trans... drop in, no welding. if you swap to a 5 speed, you need the mounts... and all the other 5 speed stuff.
ok sweet... so if i just drop in an eco auto then do i need to change the electronic or will mine work for the eco? and all i need is engine and tranny and it will basically jus drop rite in? no changing drivetrain or anything??
