i went down to autozone and in an effort to save on cash bought the pieces to build an intake. I bought their main tube, a 90 bend, some extra pipe and a 60 bend and a filter. i got the stock intake out no problem. the box tubes everything. I went to put on the tube that connects into the engine and i could not get it to clear the hood. It came too high over the cable to the right of it. is there any way around this?? also, will i loose my sensors that were in my old intake box? thanks for the help.
you're better off buying one thats premade instead of going cheap. Performance costs $, dont try and cheap out..
yea, you would lose sensors... your iat sensor is in there (intake air temp, lets the computer how much timing it should pull based on how hot the air coming in is!), and there is a hose connected to the stock air box running from a nipple on the left hand side of your head....emissions thing i think...
important stuff... if you can add these things to your intake then you should, even though some people say the car doesnt "need" either of them...
i'd recommend the same thing ender did, go with a pre made one, you will end up saving money (maybe), and having a intake that looks like a$$

This is why I bought the K&N. To me it's worth the extra money to know everything is going to fit and all the pieces are there. Some prefer to go the cheaper (?) route, such as DIY or eBay, but if you do, you should be prepared to deal with the installation issues that will likely occur.
The intake air sensor needs to be adapted to your tube. Most I have seen just have a hole drilled in the tube and the sensor sits in the hole via a rubber grommet. The piece of small tubing you refer to that goes back to the engine should be routed in a way so as to avoid any hard interference, but if it just touches your hood when the hood is closed, it should not really cause any problems. You might try using some small tie wraps to position the tubing so that it is out of the way.
If you bought a spectre intake, You need a 90* rubber elbow, it will give you the clearance you need. and to hook up the hose and sensor, you need there "manifold" peice. Its real simple. You should have chexked prior so you will have no problems.
i have a 90 piece, but it is still too high comming off the throttle body to clear the hood.
So the hose that is a problem is the large hose to the TB. I thought you were referring to the small air hose. So if the TB hose causes the intake to sit too high, can you trim off some of the lower part of the hose where it connects to the TB so that the intake will sit lower?

This guys an expert on LEGO intakes so you should listen to him.
it's the actual intake that is too high off of the TB to clear the hood...
This is why, in my opinion, it is better to buy a pre-made intake that is guaranteed to fit. For instance, the AEM intake has a special pice that connects to the throttle body so that it will clear the hood. Heres a pic of what I am talking about...
The Weapon-R intkae has something similar...
Its called research and developement and thats what you are paying for whan you buy an intake.
is it possible to buy that silver cap on the Weapon-R that sits on the TB seperatly?? i think that would solve my problem.
yes, look in google for the cobra head coupler.
i searched google for corbra head coupler, cobra hear coupler intake, cobra head coupler intake cavalier....but i found nothing that is going to help me out. Do you know a site that sells them?
what about this piece? does anyone have it or know if it will clear the hood and throttle body cable? it looks like it will. but i want to be sure.

thanks for your help... I'll let you know how it turns out.
i'm surprised nobody mentioned the hook up for the FPR.. i assume thats the "hose apparently for emissions" or something similar
better be sure thats hooked up to a vacuum source... its kind of important... since fuel is one of the main ingredients for combustion you know?
i have a piece of pipe with some pre-drilled holes that i will install when i am able to remove the old box that hooks up to the TB
again, you're better off buying a premade intake, the crap from Autozone is a complete joke, especially the Spectre section.... Those intake's are engineered for the best air intake resonation, and flow for the best possible gain.

What? Are you serious , YOU NEED VACUUM
AND FUEL?
just go to your local hardware store and get a piece of black pvc, trim about an inch off the bottom end and use a coupler to attach, it works for me and i have about a quarter inch of clearance between the intake and the hood. my IAT and fpr vaccum are hooked up and working fine. i also noticed a slight drop in quarter times from just replacing that stupid box.
pardon the crappy camera phone pictures at night
