2200 Suggestions

Hey guys,

I just picked up a 98 Sunfire SE with the 2200 engine with a MT. I was wondering what you guys would suggest as far as performance parts go (preferrably just bolt ons as I don't have that much cash kicking around). Thanks for your time.

Nick

this same exact question was asked less than a day ago...check the performance FAQ's , they have lots of suggestions. but bolt on wise...start with an air intake and exhaust and by then, you should know what you can/want to do from there good luck

i had a header, cai, high flow cat. 2.25inch pipes with a magnalflow muffler. it was a 2200 auto with 87K on it when i did all this dyno was 103hp 120ish for torque.

2200 autos are really slow...5-speed aint a whole lot better, but i was just answering the question

Isn't 115 HP and 120 Ft.\Lbs of torque the stock spec for the 2200?

Oh, Yeah that is probally true.. so theoretically, If he didnt have aftermarket engine mounts wouldn't torque be lower? LOL just a thought...

There is more parasitic loss in an automatic transmission, due to the fluid coupling in the torque converter. The stock torque converters are terribly inefficiant.

Also, in srock form, the head is the biggest restrtiction to performance. External bolt-ons will only net small gains.

For any decent gains, you have to do some head work, such as a port and polish with the +1mm oversized valves, surface the head about upto .025" and/or the Cometic head gasket (.020"-.036" thick)for a total of .035" to increase the compression ratio (note: don't go over .020" without an adjustable rocker arm conversion) and a full roller rocker arm conversion with 1.6:1 rocker arms and the appropriate studs. The stock rocerarms are roller rockers, but they were actually measered to be a 1.54:1 ratio, so aftermarket rockers would restore the true ratio for more lift.

It's alot of reading but here are just a few links for more information: 2200 power record, 2.2/2200 OHV Rocker Arm List, 2200 valve springs and OHV Lifter thread.... lets get a discussion going. These are but a few of the major threads that go into a major discussion of the 2.2L/2200 OHV motors and what we've discovered the motors are capable of.

The automatic transmissions need work also, to make the most of the gains made with the info above. See the transmission forum for more info.

The 2.2L/2200 OHV motors are capable of alot more performance then the OHV Haters (they are always quick to flame you, but we who do the work are quick to help) are willing to admit, it just takes some research and work. Just ignore what the haters say and decide for yourself.
