Engine swap done!! but won't start!! - Performance Forum

I swapped from a 97 2.2 to a 99 2.4 fully built motor.. The motor is in, it cranks but it wont start at all.. During cranking fuel pressure on my rail fuel gauge reads 40 psi and falls quickly to about 20 psi when I stop cranking. Im getting fuel, we pulled my spark plugs.. Im kinda thinking its the Injectors, I have 2001 Z injectors in there.
Ive double checked all my sensors, but that wouldnt stop the car from starting right? The whole wiring harness is hooked up..
Another this is that while im cranking the car, my volt meter only reads about 8-9 volts.. But when the key is just turned on to accessories, the volts read 12-13.
Do you guys have any Idea on something else I could check to just to at LEAST get it started?
Thanks.

If you did a PCM swap you might have to do the "Theftlock Relearn" or what ever it's called.
Try to start the car and leave the key in the ON position. The THEFT light should blink. (don't open or close doors, turn on/off anything) Let it blink for 10min. or until it stays on solid. Turn the key off for a 10 count , try to start the car. You might have to do it 2-3 times.

^^See thats what I thought I had to do,(I did that a long time ago with my cluster swap) But I thought the car would die during startup?
Ok, Ill try that.. Ill try to crank it and then do what you said..
Thanks Gary.

i think the battery reading shouldn't go below like 9.5 when cranking, i forget the exact number. But, if it is the battery, you could always just jump it with another car that is running and see how it turns over then.
where did you get the ecu? If it was from a junkyard, the ecu could be bad, a dealership once told me that it could rust internally from sitting..... tho its in the wheel well so god only know if thats true. But a junkyard told me that the ecu might have to be reflashed because it may have lost its memory from sitting for so long without any power going to it.

I'm surprised you show up to our meets after half of the things you say on here.
Ok, If it is a 99 2.4, does that have the low impedance injectors or the high impedance? What year ECU are you running?
Go Go OG Traction!!
VTLoki - Yeah I thought it should be higher as well.. So we tried jumping it with my friends RX-7 with no luck.
RaGiN Z (the fake 05) - I bought it last yea from a guy that had it on his car, so no didnt get it at the junkyard thank goodness lol
NIck, its a 99 with no egr. Therefore its basically the same thing as a 2000+.. High Impedence injecters.
IM pretty sure its the theft lock issue.. Im going to take care of that on my lunch break and fire it up.
Thanks fellas

sounds like theft relearn needs to get done
and the 99 will work with low ohm injectors , my 97 has been running a 99 pcm program for several years
If theftlock isn't the issue, check your FPR. My car did the same exact thing and it took me HOURS to figure out what was going on. The fuel pressure was normal during cranking, but would drop shortly after. Turned out the FPR diaphragm was shot and was pushing gas through the vac line into the S/C.

Well I just did the passlock theft procedure and thats not it.. Its like my battery is almost dead . Ill be turning and the cranks get shorter and shorter like it wants to shut off. My volts are still between 8-9 when the key is in the position right before you start the car..
My afpr has AEA and 1307 on the top of it.. I have no Idea what those letters and numbers mean.. Its the LT1 accel afpr.. Do I only adjust that once the car is started or what?
Thanks guys..

ar eyou getting fuel into the cylinders? if so did you check to see if you have spark?
Has to be a spark or fuel problem. Is you fuel pump running when you turn the key to the on position?
Also make sure that your IDI cover plug is plug in securely.
Also do you know if your timing is correct?

if it starts slowly turning the battery is very weak
and cranking should be in the 10 to 11 range , even with the 98-older larger starter
Yeah, i'm along with the fuel/spark.
Check to make sure the plugs are actually sparking. If they are then I'd check your grounds. I had a problem with my swap, didnt have all the grounds hooked up. And since the ECU shorts the injector to a ground (thus completing the circuit) that kept the injectors from running.
try spraying some 2+2 gum cleaner OR carburetor cleaner in the intake a few times and crank it. worked for me when i had this EXACT problem.
Yeah it is not theft lock. The car would start, but shut off. Sounds like fuel or spark. As asked is fuel making it in the combustion chanber.
FU Tuning
Thanks guys.
Yes we pulled the plugs and its getting spark.. I know the battery is weak, its an optima red top and it was out of the car for 2 weeks.. I heard you cant charge these things or something like that after they have been disconnected for a while..
My timing is good,, even if it wasnt timed correctly wouldnt it still start but run like crap? Also the fuel pump is running when in the ON position. I can hear that kick on.
My grounds I think are right.. The one big one is on the tranny(the one connected to the battery tray), and there are like 2-3 that actually come from the wiring harness and those are connected to the block right below the HO manifold.
The only other thing I think it could be is youk now how are J's had the ignition recall module put on the starter? Well what if I got 1 of the wires in the wrong place? Could that be an issue of it not turning over? I was looking at Mats 01 Z24 wile connecting mine up lol.
Im going to have to go get a regular battery and see if that will do the trick..
Thanks again guys..
Keep your suggestions coming..

This may be an off the wall question, but umm does the axel have to be in in order for the car to start? IM guessing NOT but its worth a shot.. Maybe both axels lock up the tranny and its all related ha, who knows? Im just grabbin for straws here. My passenger side axle isnt in yet because I had to order it.
btw, I got a new battery and the volts kicked back up.. But I dont want to keep cranking on it because I think thats what drained my red top optima.

I GOT IT!!! HELL yea my ish starts lol.. My theft light is blinking right now so im letting the pcm re-learn itself..
The problem was, the coil on the underside of the IDI cover was not hooked up to the little sensor inside of there..
You guys were right,, Thats why I wasnt getting spark.. I owe a huge thanks to you guys for throwing out Ideas for me..
Ill get all my pics up here soon in the photo section..
