How could I get close to 300hp from a cavalier?
Monday, July 24, 2006 3:20 PM
i'm debating wether or not I want to keep the cavy and go all out with it or buy something with more potential stock. If i can't come close to 300 on a really souped up 2.4l or eco, i might not be driving a cavy in the future. Idk yet.

Can I ask why "300 hp" is the magical number?

Because 300 is up in the Sti/Evo range, if I can't keep up with one of them or of something of that caliber, I'm not gonna waste my money and I'll just save for a long time and get an Evo, since that's my dream car and I won't be satisifed until I get one anyway.

Save your money, get the Evo.

Even if you make the same EXACT power as the Evo, you will still OWN a Cavalier. It wont ride the same, it wont feel the same, it will never be the same. An Evo or a STI is AWD which means, off the line, they will always be quicker than you.

I say, save, get the Evo and be happier.

It would be nice to beat something like Sti/Evo with a Cavalier tho

i say stick with the cav, it is an underdog, it is nice to surprise people when they think your cav cant do @!#$ against their sti, or evo. I think it would be more to be proud of. Keep the cav and still get your evo, im still going to get my 3000gt. p.s. if the othe guy cant shift to save his life in the 1/4 hp means nothing.

lol I wish I could do both up, but I can barely afford the Cav, I'm gonna have to save up for years as it is, until my insurance goes down because of my age is a start, and even then i'm gonna have to make payments, so i definitely can't trick out both. Unless I get a much better job in the future.

You won't get 300hp "reliably" out of a Cavalier for cheap... you could get it a couple of times... but not daily driver kinda reliable.

Or you could spend an outrageous amount of money.... more than an STi or EVO... to make it reliable.

Basically... what's the point? Effectively doubling the power of a stock Cavalier... and making it handle it... it's been done by a few, and it's nothing special anymore

If you ask that question, you don't have the knowledge nor the will to make 300hp.

totally agree, nomatter how fast your car is its still a cavalier or a sunfire. only reason i basically mod my car is because i dont want to be sunk with payments on a evo or sti or srt-4 so i took the cheap route and built a close to 300hp sunfire instead on charger and nitrous.

i agree. i'm sure people see an evo or sti and think "power" when they see a cavy they think "weak" and i'm planning to have 303HP when i'm done.

true, everyones doing it it seems and in my honest opinion its pretty easy to double and then some of the power a cavalier has, just takes some knowledge and cash. now i havent dyno'd my car since it was stock but telling from my outdated 1/4 mile slip i should have around 250whp untuned which is around 290ish crank which isnt too awful bad, just takes some time and money and some good searchin on the j-body forums.

In all honesty........ I'd stay with my Cavi....... here are my reasons why:

One, Parts are cheaper.
Two, no crazy insurance.
Three, not everyone and their brother tries to race you every time you drive it.
Four, coupes are sexier then sedans (sorry 4 door guys ).
Five, theres no AMS Cavalier pushing 1000whp out there to steal all my thunder.
Six, fellow Cavi owners arnt as stuck up as ALOT of Evo owners.
Seven, you can make just as much HP as ***MOST*** Evo's running around, for a hell of a lot cheaper then the cost of an Evo. Then start adding in the costs of upgrades to the Evo. (the on going quest of HP vs. Money)
And last but not least...... Eight, the look on a Stuck up Evo Owner's face, when even though they raped you out of the hole, you waxed their ass to the finish line........

Why else would I have stuck so much time, money, blood, and love into a cavalier? Because its fun. Because its some thing I love to do. Because if I break something, I can fix it. Because it makes me happy.

BUT, if someone gave me an Evo, I'd take it.

...... and to answer the question....... some sort of boost, fuel to go with it...... easiest way to get 300hp, daily driven.........

awd is only good off the line abd maybe cornering but other than that it is hundreds of pounds of slow you down
a properly tuned suspension can usually hook up just as good as awd
you don't see awd top fuel cars
i like awd but for a speed factor it is just weight to me
get your cav to 300 but remember that less weight is more acceleration judt don't take it out of the wrong place and most weight reduction is free
every little bit counts
also yes a cavy is just a cavy till you get beat by it hahahaha
bring on the dsms

Incorrect, AWD is much better at utilizing traction. The reason you don't see TOP FUEL AWD cars is because there all out at Rallys, Rallycrosses and Targas, with the exception of Easy Street who in mine and many other suby lovers opinions isn't the staple for Scooby Peformance.

Subaru, Mitsu, Audi, have no interet in straight line performance. Also ARP tuning has had decent success runing their Road Race prepped A4 in recent years.

Also in any adverse road conditions (rain, snow, dirt etc.), all other things even an AWD vehicle will always be faster than a RWD or FWD only vehicle.

Lance Sharpe: Go drive an EVO or an STI and you'll stop modding your car for that much power.
Or you could do like me, put a decent turbo kit to get the J over 200 for fun daily driving and get the Evo (or in my case and STI) for fun and keep the miles down.

What he said. And if you want to know another way to get over 300hp from a cavy look at my registry.

That and maybe the fact that when we're talking all out raw hp and proper suspension setups on the two drivetrains, RWD still launches harder than AWD.
