A true dual exhaust system on a V8 engine is a substantial improvement over a single exhaust system. Our 4 cyl cars don't really need a dual system. What they do need is good flow with minimal restriction. A header, high flow cat, 2.25 or larger pipe and low restriction muffler should achieve maximum results. The only "duals" I have seen on our cars are not really dual exhaust systems. They are single exhaust systems (one header, one resonator, one intermediate pipe) with dual mufflers and outlets.

For strictly performance reasons, a single exhaust is best. The only reason to get dual is for the look of it.

Since we've only got one bank of cylinders, and thus, only one header/manifold, a dual system simply involves splitting the exhaust stream somewhere along the line. This provides a bit of turbulance and no flow benefit. You also get the extra weight of the additional piping and muffler and what not.

The performance difference probably isn't significant but don't get a dual exhaust thinking it's an improvement in power. It's completely an appearance mod.

What about a single muffler going across the rear with 2 outlets, like the Camaro / Srt-4 / 03+ sunfire?

srt4's dont have mufflers

the regular neons have a crossflow muffler when they have the dual tips

Alright that doesn't answer my question, would a single muffler/single outlet OR single muffler/dual outlet be better for performance, or are they about the same?

Again... the dual outlet is just for appearance. No performance gain.

Remember... the goal is to get the exhaust out of the engine as efficiently as possible. This means giving it a nice smooth path that will provide a high flow rate. If it's too big, there's not enough flow and you have gases smashing into slow moving gases in the pipe. Too small and it's too constrictive. Bends and splits cause turbulence and slow things down.

More looks better... and balanced... unless it's a Porsche with a centre exhaust... which looks uber-cool.

Hell... go for three exhaust pipes. One on each side and a third in the middle. How about four? One on each side before the tires... and one on each side after the tires!!

Screw it... just take the header and make the four pipes go STRAIGHT UP outta your hood... the ultimate in flow, no restriction whatsoever... as long as it doesn't rain.... hell, get those little flaps like semi's have... heh...

alright this is the last post i have of the month so i wont be able to reply to this unless i message one of u guys. Heres my question, I'm buildin my own exhaust setup with 2.25 tubin, its gonna be header - cat - glasspack - Y-pipe - dual mufflers. Now when i start to cut and weld the piping together do i make it look like the stock exhaust piping with the bends and everything or do i make it as straight as possible?

How do you think the performance would be with this catback on a 98 Z24 automatic? Think a single outlet magnaflow (non-fart can) muffler would be better for performance or about the same?

any straight through style muffler would be a good choice. to know whats what, do a little research on the manufacturer's websites, and do some searching on here. theres plenty of info around. enough to help you decide what exactly might be rite for your application.
magnaflow mufflers tend to be loud, and without a resonator tend to be very raspy(so ive heard). but there is nothing out there that says they dont perform very well. but if you want to go the route of an almost stock exhaust level, go with dynomax superturbo mufflers.
good luck man
