engine swap, need info!!
Sunday, July 23, 2006 1:58 PM
i was originally gonna try and do a northstar swap, but now i'm considering a LS4. does anybody know where i can get specs as far as dimensions? everything i find only mentions the performance specs. i need physical measurements. i wanna try something other then the usual swaps with 3800's or just slapping a turbo on.

thanks in advance.

I believe the 3800 is the biggest you can go before you have to start really custom fabbing things up. I think the 4.0 that came in the Aurora's will go in there as well...

i was thinking of the shortstar. the 3.5 that came in the intrigue and i think it came in the aurora also. but if i recall it only has 215hp. i have to double check that one. and i saw one at the junkyard yesterday and tried to get some measurements of it. but i forgot a pen, so i couldn't write them down and i forgot what they were. some guy i've been talking to that does swaps said to forget the northstar and just put a 350 and convert to RWD. he also suggested an LS1 or LS2, that they should fit in with little to no problem. hmmmmm i have a feeling he doesn't know what he's talking about. so i'm doing all the research and taking all the measurements. i just need him (or someone else) to put it in.

i got some rough measurements of my cavy bay. hard to get good ones w/ the engine still in it. now i just need to find the sizes of the other ones and how i'm gonna go about beefing my frame up so it doesn't twist like a pretzel. lol

LMAO. id pay to see that swap with little to no problem.
people have done RWD conversions to Cavy's. but in the end, the cost dont really justify the swap
but if you want to spend the time and money in doing such a swap. go ahead.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

yeah i know. he must be a master at swaps if he can achieve that w/ no problems. i called him again today and said i changed my mind and instead of going with the north star i was gonna go with something else like the LS2, just to see what he would say. his response "yeah that's what i would do, the engine from a GTO, it should go right in" (something to that effect). he also said to just go with a 3.1 or 3.8. also, and i quote "you can go and buy a cavalier with a 3.1 in it"....yeah, if i could find a 1st gen at the junkyard.

needless to say, i don't think i'll be going to him to do the swap. and i don't want to do a RWD conversion, that's why i'm leaning towards the LS4. it's FWD.

just incase you didn't know the 3800 is a v6 and the 4.0 in the Aurora is a v8

if you remove the gas tank there is a clean path back, but you will prolly have to do a bunch if cutting for the trans. why not just buy a 3rd gen F-Body? or a 1st gen.. mmm...

Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..

how similar can they be?? for starters, what i heard is that they aren't even made in the same country! lol. only ones i can think of are that they both have four wheels and are both GMs.

yeah i know the 3800 is a V6 and that the 4.0 in the aurora is a V8. if it wasn't for the low HP, i'd try to put a 3.5 V6 out of an aurora.

i'll wait a few more years before i go and get my F-body....2010 Camaro well, probably won't be an F-body, unless they resurrect the platform.

have you seen the FWD monte carlos? the engine bay is totally filled with the 3400 DOHC I don't know the exact masurements of the engine bay compared to the cav. I also seen a FWD caddilac with a V8. Anything is possible with imagination skills and knowledge.(which I probly lack most of it)

i've read about the FWD monte carlos and caddys. the northstar was originally designed to be FWD. it was in 04 i believe that they modified it to be RWD & AWD. i've been doing alot of research i got the rough measurements for my J's engine bay and compared them to some i finally found online. seems the vortec 4300 will fit alright with some room to spare ( just a little, but still some to spare.) if you all are curious, let me know and i'll post what i got.

You just refuse to listen to me, dont you? Like I told you before in the other threaad... Someone around my area is doing the 3.5 DOHC into a 3rd gen and he had to cut a crap loud out of the pass side frame just to fit the engine with the belt tensioner on. The v8 will not fit without some SERIOUS modification to the frame and probably strut tower...

Anything can be done... with lots and lots of money, time and determination.

There are V8 RWD Cavaliers and Sunfires... are they street legal? No, they're built as racecars. And they cost $250,000 each. Personally, I'd rather buy a nice house and a Camaro.

when did i ever say a V8 would fit with little to no modification? i know it'll take some mad fabrication. and i said the 4.3 "seems" like it'll fit. i'm going by the info i have with me, and being a V6, not a V8, it's a little smaller. if i decide to go with that, i'll look for one out of a syclone
