i was told Zacky poo that using synthetic oil on a high mileage motor is bad becuase the oil finds its way through little cracks and bad seals and old gaskets very easily and it leaks alot because of that fact. Atleast thats what i've read on here and been told. By the way... i want that header damn it

If it does find it's way through little cracks, bad seals, and old gaskets, then it will give you the opportunity to see what seals and little cracks need to be fixed!

what you've heard is yet another myth of synthetic oil... synthetic oil with a 5w-30 viscosity rating will not be able to pass through a smaller orifice than 5w-30 mineral oil. The only thing really all that different about synthetic is that it tolerates higher temperatures before its susceptible to thermal breakdown, and is more resistant shearing than mineral oil. Some synthetics do contain more detergent additives, which can break down old sludge build up in the motor and cause some seals to leak that didn't leak before. But it is NOT because the synthetic can somehow magically fit through spaces that mineral oil of the same viscosity can't. If you have an engine where the oil has been changed regularly, and there is minimal sludge buildup, you shouldn't have any worries changing to synthetic. However, engines with a lot of sludge can have problems switching over, because the synthetic may lift the sludge off of the interior walls of the block and if the sludge is thick enough, it can plug oil passages and even block the pickup screen for the pump.

So i should probably not use it? My car is running as if it's missing the HP it had before, and then i saw the Quaker state commercial for "making sure you're getting all your horses"

what brand should i go with? is there an oil that can cause my engine to run cooler?

The best thing to do if you are not sure is to get regular 10W-30 Oil of a name brand (Not any Wal-Mart Brands), A Fram Oil Filter. Next step is to get a K&N Air Filter, they usually go for around $30-$40 for a Cavalier at Autozone... They might have to order it which will take a day. Then get new spark plugs, I go with either Bosch Platinum 2, or 4 which go from $3-5 each.. (I will be getting denseo ones next). Also what could definatly be robbing you of Horsepower is your fuel filter... You can get one for about $10 and if your not sure how to put it in bring it to a shop and they will do it for about $15.

That is the most basic things that you can do to see if it helps your performance.. If it still runs like crap have someone check it out.

I agree, ditch the Bosche JUNK! go with an NGK/AC Delco only, champions are crap and just about every other is crap to. anyone that spends the cash on iridium plugs thinking performance is a loony sumbitch. When i was taking some refresher courses i got a chance to sit and chat with an NGK rep. about iridium plugs and they were only designed for people that dont like to change plugs for 200,000km's. bad for performance applications as they are very easy to foul and when they do they are junk. same with platinum plugs, great for every day use, foul them once and they're junk.

I've never spent cash on anything other than a standard copper core plug, and just about anyone that rolls in/out of the shop with a performance vehicle (be it v6,v8 or even 4cyls) have copper plugs in...

in your head maybe, iridiums are not going to make any difference over platinums or copper core plugs unless we're talking in terms of milage or different brands (in a stock GM car, Delco/NGK are reccomended). copper cores are good for around 20,000km's, platinums are good for 100,000km's and the new iridiums were designed to last 198,000km's under regular everyday driving. this is why car manufacturers use platinums and most are going to iridums now just because its less maint and less problems/complaints from customers (because changing plugs is so hard and expensive to do once a year ya know!)

again not saying any of them are junk, just stating that they were designed for certain things and have + and -'s.
